View Full Version : painting with masks
vallaha 11-17-2007, 02:37 PM will someone take a look at the image and look very closely and see where the area(indicated by arrows) are darker. the darker areas i painted on a new layer with a mask. the problem is i want to change only those darker areas, indicated by arrows, to black and rest of the layer stays the same colour. i have used a mask to keep that rectangle shape seperated from the others as you can see from the picture but i still cant get the colour change without changing the whole layer or rectangle shape black. im a newbie so if you reply please reply in words i can understand thanx in advance for your advice
cheers

Just re-created your scene to show steps...
(1) You have an image you want to edit

(2) Make a mask shape as close as possible. White area would be 'paintable' and Black area is 'unpaintable.' Make sure the box on left on mask layer is selected, not the mask itself.

(3) Either 'Fill' with the black or 'paint' black into the area 'masked'

Think 'Mask' as spraying cardboard box cutout... Blocked by cardboard box ('Black' area) will not be allowed get painted, and open section of cardboard box ('White' area) will be only painted.
Hope this helps..

Want to add that it's often better to use a Solid Color adjustment layer instead of filling a layer with a single color;
- it uses less space
- it's easier to modify
