When I look at this piece, I'm saddened.... no wait, what's the word... as yes! Delighted!

In all seriousness though, that's really great work.

How long did it take to model everything? I'd think it would take a while to make all those objects individually, are most of them just slight variations of others?

Heh heh, nice easter egg with the teapot in the back. Excellent touch!

Truly amazing!!!
There is someting confusing me with the floor. The reflections near the "door" make the floor look somehow blury while on other sides it is quite sharp.

By the way: How can I rate stars???

I think that the pictures above the fireplace could have a more aged look to them, also I am not shure what the dark spot (shadow?) above the candle on the left of the image is from. Overall nice image, and excelent lighting. Maby you could show us how you lit this scene?

wow, great work. one things stands out for me right now though, that's the map leaning agianst the book on the table. because of it's angle and lighting it looks a little out of place, but apart from that this is a wonderful amazingly detailed image. how long did it take to render?

the dark spot would be form the plaster getting smoked by the nearby candleflame.

Good idea, however if that was the cause the smoke would disperse (sp) more causing a larger grey spot and not the long black one. If you are refering the the flame burning the plaster I can see that but the burn't area would be smaller I think. Also the marks don't appear where there are other candles close to walls, see in the kitchen and by the fireplace to the right.

Don

All of these great comments from everyone is very encouraging.
and thanks for the great ratings.

I was hoping some would catch the teapot in the back, and it was placed there intentionally.

The dark spot above the candle on the left is supposed to represent smoke build-up from the candle, I just could'nt get that right, it was killing me.
That was one of the things, I was not really satisfied with.

Overall though I was very, very happy with the results.

Please anyone with comments please feel free to post.

Well from the last time I saw this to now it has improved for the better. I still see somethings that would be nice to change but they are all minor and don't distract me from the whole image.
I'm just wondering if you could post a nice wireframe showing just the room off. I dont need to see the teapots. lol.
Anyways keep this quality work up and think Dynaimic. lol

There are a couple of shadows that look a little funny here and there, but they are so minor so the don't matter much :) Very good job.

Btw, because of the shadow behind the candle on the wall near the window, the smokestain looks like a shadow of something that isn't there... Maybe soften the edges more?

Samadan
04-16-2003, 10:40 AM
Ok, first post for me. I've been lurking a while and this id the first time I've felt moved to comment. This is a very nice piece, the lighting and radiosity really help make the scene seems real.

The major ascpect that struck me was that, despite the excellent lighting and detail, it still seemed 'too cg'. I took the liberty of sticking your pic in Photoshop and added some noise. We are so used to looking at images on film and photographs, when there are no imperfections something looks 'wrong'.

Try noise settings of. 2.5% Gaussian with Monochromatic checked. Play about and see if it makes a difference :)

Again, good image - well done.

Excellent job but i find the mug/beaker thing on the table very distracting as it is very close in color to the candle on the stand.
It is the first thing that leaps into my eye and draw it there. and being similar in size to the candle bit in the background, they form a bright spot in the whole picture.
I think the color of the mug should be changed
Otherwise this is a very good job done.

Very well crafted piece. Nice and cozy feel to it..as it should be in a hobbit hole. ;) The only crit I would have is that the fireplace and the logs seem unused, maybe dirty up the inside with lots of soot and ashes. 5 Stars here as well. Keep it up!

WOW!!!!!!
The front page thanks mods and thanks to everyone else for all the great comments.

Here is the a Wireframe (http://www.corey-butler.com/Wire_Lo.jpg) for those interested, i know robetp wanted to see.

Samadan - I originally added some grain to the image but toned it down alot to give just a slight variation, I didnt want to over do it.

PeterC -Yes that is Arwen on the right. I used lights in the windows to simluate sun pouring into the room and a Direct light for the sunlight on florors and walls. Then played and played and played with the GI settings to get the right amount of light in the room

I think overall it took me about 60-70 hours to model, light, and R&D some Vray stuff with the materials.
Thats a rough guess because I dont do any time tracking on personal projects. It seems like a long time to me but between my job and family I get interupted constantly and never get a good workflow going.
I am very, very happy with the result though.

Wonderful lighting...

Only crits:

1: Surfaces seem too square and regular... (more warping and wear in the corners and edges of the wood surfaces would push the image a bit more.

2: More varation in the wear (textures) of wood areas (i.e. more worn on the areas Hobbits might touch etc...)

GREAT WORK!!!!
