View Full Version : is this possible in Shave n H?
flingster 04-15-2003, 05:36 PM saw this today on worley-sasq site
http://www.worley.com/TutFiles/TeskaDragon/index.html
was wondering whether it was possible in shave n haircut.
had a go at using "instance" function under material-render part but can't get it to work...any tips etc on getting instance to work...i just thought you named the object and voila! but seems not....dunno if instance would pull off dragon scales but just a thought.:wip:
cheers

its actually possible that you could do this with hair department. i am not sure entirely how to because I cant get hair to work in anything but german. but I think this could definitly be done with hair department.

This should be possible, although to achieve that look I'd use regular hair instead of instances. Just set the root width to a high number, the tip width to a small number, lower the segments to something like 5-6, and of course scale the hair way down.

AdamT: thats a clever thought bud...like it...will give it a go...did you get instance to work for ya before though? i can't get it to work...was wondering if anybody had done like in the manual....a set of trees etc.
JIII: awhile ago...checked ot hair department...supposed to be very good...but never tried it before as i got shave etc....but i'm sure it would also be possible in hair dept also....i just came across the tut on worley the guys who make lightwaves famous sasquatch hair stuff...
the idea could as he mentioned be applied to many things not just scales...
thanks guys.

the method adam is describing is actually very similar to teh method used in that image. the image was a part of a tutorial detailing that same technique only using sas rather than shave.
personally i'd do it with dicloner or shave instancing instead, as it's pretty tough work getting the hair clumps to be so evenly spaced.

mdme_sadie: wouldn't dicloner just kill my machine..kinda like poly hair! heh heh.
i really like the idea though cos it can be applied to lots of different stuff...guys let me know if you come up with any cool settings it would be worth me checking out...i will likewise.
thanks...

My avatar' hair is done with hair Dept.
it is possible to change the shapes of the hair things using splines that are shaped diffrently.
remember papiis lady bird pic that was done in hair department. the feathers were modified by a spline. and then alpha was used to shape them.

Hi Flingster. I have gotten instances to work, but it's been a while and I don't remember the exact steps off the top of my head. When I get a chance I'll do it again and post how it was done.

AdamT: you top man....i was wondering...i just came back to it and still couldn't get it to work! any info would be cool.
anobrin & JIII : i thought you could do this, maybe i'm wrong...eg make a thicker blade of grass or perhaps change spline...but in the back of my mind as not used it before...probably wrong...it maybe was another plugin for 7? dunno.

You know, I just looked at my plugin menu and HD no longer shows up. I guess its incompatable with 8.1.

Does v8.1 have renderable splines?
It'd be alot of legwork but it could be done. I use HD a bit and it's great for grass and alot of other stuff. This could be done with HD definately but it wouldn't be to easy, I imagine. I've messed around with Shave a bit also but havn't spent too much time trying to figure it out so I can't give an objective opinion there.
Good luck! :bounce:

Guys.. seriously ive use HD extensively
you can shape some splines to look like scales and apply
the HD "volume" feature much like "quickpipe but the polygon count would be unmanagable on anything much bigger than a gecko
I imported this simple biped into C4DXL7.3 from MAX and "grew" some HD animated hair on his torso
but the render time was horrendous!!!:annoyed:

a quick mess about this afternoon. top one shave and the lower one is dicloner.
http://www.flingster.com/cgtalk/scalestest.jpg
i had problems with shave on material settings...gettting it to retain under style > rand scale and thick root...always seemed to reset back! self shadow settings would let you darken more scale look..and killing gloss. cut length of about 0.5, then higher root splay than tip.. not to happy with it...but i was playing about...still looks like hair to me though.
dicloner had loads of problems with...eg controlling flow direction of cloned poly...(the advantage of shave)...also mdme_sadie...any tips would be goodie...tried all types of draw types...and klone modes...but still looked pretty slim...with a lot of work (selections) though i think you could get it to look pretty nifty though.
lemme know how you guys get on...or if you got any ideas about instancing or retaining settings etc! Or if you just wanna say...that sux flingster...sort yourself out! heh heh...come on i was playing...about....its all about the challenge isn't it!!!

thanks guys i was wondering...if AdamT & Mdme_sadie maybe had some cool tactics for going about it.
JoelD: i wish...but i know what you mean though....heh heh...i was working on the head separately...but then saw the sasqu tut i posted at beginning of thread...and thought i'll take a break from it...and play about with scale things...heh heh.
JIII: come on...you with nothing to say...jeez...you running a temperature bud!! just kiddin i know what you mean. wasn't fishing for compliments...just trying to find out if people had tried anything else on it...but i guess if you ain't got shave...its kinda a non starter thread for ya (sorry)....apart from its supposed to be possible with dicloner...think would take a lot of work...but i think you could get some funky results...without necessarily killing your pc either...
thanks again...
