View Full Version : How to make the metal look older
hellservant 11-16-2007, 06:02 PM Hi , i'm just a newbie in using photoshop and i'm drawing a pic of tome.
http://www.file2go.com/img.php?im=893s1
And now i have a problom about the metal that cover the corner of the tome, there're too much specular.
Can you suggest me some technic to reduce the specular and the way to make this metal look older? To make it look like the ancient tome in fantasy scene.
Thank you everyone ^ ^.

since art can only be as good as the references used, I'd suggest just using some similar materials to what you're looking for.
Here's some quick reference urls I was able to pull. Perhaps using one of these for diffuse color textures would do the trick. Also use specular and gloss maps, and maybe even bump maps, to fully utilize the software's ability to reproduce worn metal looks...
But anyway, the links:

Hope these help you out. If nothing else, they'll give some good color sampling, and ideas of good weathering techniques...

If you want to use the adjustment layer like you seem to be doing right (btw, there are better ways to do this without using adj. layers), then simply change the highlight in your adjustment layer, it's a section called Highlight Mode, change its opacity, color and blending mode and you should be fine. On top of that I would advice you to blend the result with a nice texture using Pattern Overlay or better, by using a clipping layer with a texture on top of it (adjust opacity and blending mode).
