View Full Version : Spline Patch confusion

I stumbled upon a weird solution today with 'SplinePatch'
that allowed me to convey a shape pretty accurately.
But I was unable to replicate it, or have as much control
as I wanted.

The first image has the first 3 splines and then a spline copied
to make a profile. Although it doesn't actually conform to that last spline,
it handles the curve quite nicely, but I'm not sure why - seems to go
against the purpose of the software.

In the second image, this is how it deals with only 3 splines,
obviously not desired if you need to keep working with the model
after the fact.

Also, it only works with the auto-select patch.
If it's a manual choice, I get what was expected.

What I'm looking to do is, is create patches as nice as the first shot I posted,
without it being such a mystery as to why it works this way.

Thanks..

As I haven't used SplinePatch in quite a while, and not at all since 2.5, this may be worthless but I'll suggest it anyway. My guess is that patches made from four splines result in quads whereas patches made from three splines result in triangles. If I remember correctly, three-spline patches are new to v 2.5.

Perhaps by adding that fourth spline, even though it's not a boundary spline, you're essentially tricking it into creating quads for you.

The solution would be to make sure you have four boundary splines, even if the one at the tip is itsy bitsy teeny weeny.
