View Full Version : rendering 2d
lazlow 04-15-2003, 03:26 PM I need help regarding 2d images in max. I use max 4.2, and also illustrate, a renderer that gives a "cel-shaded" look to my work. This may seem very simple, but what is the best way (if its possible) to import a bitmap image(or similar), into max, and then render it. i am wanting to get 2d images into max, then render them as cel-shaded.
is this possible? all i can think of is applying the image as a texture to a surface.
thanx

Hmm, not easy to cel-shade a 2d image. You need a 3d surface to get shading, which allows Max to cel-shade the scene.
You are probably better off using a Photoshop filter (or series of filters) to cel-shade an existing artwork.
Unless you want to recreate the 2D image as 3D objects.

thought i might have to end up using photoshop. its just that the renderings look very good cel-shaded in max.
how would i go about recreating the 2D image as 3D objects? i've just started getting to grips with max, only really used it for creating simple objects, and rendering them with standard textures.

Might be rather involved, depends entirely on the 2D image you want to recreate. Can you post an example?

the following is an example. mainly to cel-shade cars, as they have sharp lines, and would give a dramatic look. would want to be able to cel-shade practically any image. for that i guess i will have to look at photoshop.

Sorry, you won't get good results this way, unless you actually model the car in 3D.
The only 2D images that might translate well into cel-shaded are those that have smooth gradients running across their shapes. Even then it will never look as good.

ok. thanx for the help. i'll try modelling it, or looking for a model on the net. and i'll look into applying filters to the images, in photoshop for a cel-shaded look
