So after seeing all the awesome 3d work here, I realized that I was doing some thing wrong. All my work seems like it was made in the mid 1990's, the reason my utter lack of knowledge of how to render using mental ray. I would really like to fool around with some mental ray shaders so if any one has a link to any that, would be awesome. I am suprised this doesnt get asked every five seconds, but meh. I run max at home, and I use maya in class, so shaders for either programs would me great. Also any specific mental ray lighting tutorials out there? Most of the tutorials are ver basic, this is how light works, but not very technical on the software side. I come from a fine arts back ground so I am very familiar with how light works, but less so with getting it to look right in max, and maya.

Hi,

I'm trying to learn more about mr as well. I've found the MentalBoutMax blog, site and training modules to be a great start. The modules are reasonably cheap and very instructional.

http://www.mentalboutmax.blogspot.com/ --- Blog - some free training videos
http://www.mentalboutmax.com/ -- can purchase training modules here

Hope this helps a little.

Good thread, I'll be waiting for replies as well.

Get max2008, it has a new mental ray, and excellent help pdf's. Also lighting setup became much simplier and in help files there are common shaders creation explained very well. You can learn mr now in 2 days to get nice results.

getting max 2008 is out of the question for now. There is no way I can affoard it. But I have been playing around, found some tutorials on SSS shadding and Ambient occlusion. And came up with this. Not to bad for like 3 days of trying to learn some thing. I cant wait to learn more!
