View Full Version : Comet tail and Coma?
mt_sabao 04-15-2003, 10:35 AM Ok, so iīm planning to do a space scene (animation) and i want do a comet. I havenīt started working on it, but what do you guys think will be the best aproach to do the tail and coma? Keep in mind that a comet is basicly a frozen rock emitting vaporized gases, as yo can see in the image.
Thanks in advance.

Mdme Sadie has done a brilliant comet which I believe is on his home page.Actually on second thoughts it may be a meteor, but its definitely worth a look :)

Iīve searched his homepage and found nothing...
But anyway, comet and meteorite are completely diferent things. The comet tail is formed from the gases that are being evaporated from its surface (as the he aproaches the Sun that starts to heat it); while the meteorites ionizes the air (from earthīs atmosphere) around them, making this air glow...
So i want to simulate this particles surrounding the cometīs nuclei and being evaporated from the surface

Do you have a still image in mind, or do you want it to be animated? There are different approaches, but it kinda depends on the result you want. Seen from a distance, or really close by? Detail or not? and so on.

Ok, so this will be an animation. The comet is first seen at distance, but then there will be an aproach an the spectator will ride through the solar system in the comet.
So i want to do it detailed.
yeah I think sadie did have something like this a long time ago on bhodi nut, I am not sure if it made it onto renderzone though. ask him if he still has the file, you just might get lucky.
Here is a tut on making a comet...

Hi,
sounds like a job for Thinking Particles and Matterwaves. Matterwaves will allow you to emit particles from a surface controlled by a texture and/or a light. This way you can even controll the particles speed depending on the amount of light and if they should be emitted at all.
Have a look at the Maxon website fo a TP Matterwaves example, it's available here:
8.1 Examples (ftp://ftp.maxoncomputer.co.uk/pub/r8/up/c4d_r81_examples.zip)
Hope this helps

yeah thanks, that tutorial looks cool, i will try it.
But i was tinking on using perhaps particles, to simulate the tail and the material being ejected. What do you guys think?

Canīt i use Thinking Particles only?

matterwaves is a part of thinking particles.
personally i would do it using either geometry being deformed (the smoke example on my site might be a good starting point) or visible lights carefully controling their falloff and colors.

well, this is an example i got from a cd...i think it was the cd that came with my c4d book by Arndt.

mdme_sadie:
You mean a particle emitter of visibl lights?
thanks guys, iīll start working on it, and will soon post some results.

when i siad the way i would do it, i meant i wouldn't use particles at all. i'd use visible lights or geometry to make up the shapes.
what srek was talking about was matterwaves which is a node in thinking particles, so matterwaves would be teh thinking particles way of doing things.

Hi, here is my current work in progress with the comet. I used a particle emitter, emitting visible lights.
Iīm very happy with the resul, but the only bad thing is that the render is kind of slow.
The emitter has a birthrate of 200, and a lifetime of 200 frames. The visible lights have no noise.
Any comment and critic are very welcome, and specially some idea how i could smooth the render time...

if the speed were increased, along with adding trace colors to emulate trace elements in the ice coming off... also the center is a bit more noticiable than it probably should be... would suggest a luminocity falloff to make it look softer... believe mr blevins has a tut here (http://www.neilblevins.com/cg_education/complex_mats_falloff/complex_mats_falloff.htm) if your interested
personally I think if anything were being burned off the surface of that thing it would be in the front leading to a smoothed rounded, or at least rounder of a front.
nice pic.
