Okay, I'd really LIKE to get an Alienware or a BOXX or something else likewise shiiiiny and neat, but I just plain do not have the frikken budget for it.

Is it even possible to get a halfway decent comp for CG work, for under $1000 bucks? I don't know how to build my own yet, but to make ends meet I'm going to have to darn well figure it out. Anybody have some recommendations on where to get parts, or what kind of system might work? I want to stick with something Athlon... and as long as it has a better video card than the GeForce 2 I've been stuck using, I'll be happy. :insane:

I'm pretty sure that you could get something pretty decent for about $1000 US, altho I'm in Australia so I can't really help, but I'd imagine prices would be even more competitive in the States.... GL! :D

This is handy info guys, keep it comin!

Oh-- and I use 3ds MAX.

I've been digging around 3dluvr.com for recommendations and reviews, the FAQs over there are darn handy!

Slowly but surely I'm starting to sort out what parts I ought to get-- I think I'm going to go with a Gainward GeForce4, those are about 150 bucks (for a 128 meg one).

I also would like a motherboard with the longest future ahead of it I can easily get-- preferably something dual, and nforce2.

Problem: I can't for the life of me get newegg.com to show me mobos for DUAL processors... stupid thing. :annoyed: Or maybe I just dunno what it calls them. Argh, so much comp jargon to absorb so fast! :argh:

Any other sites to recommend? Even once I pick the hardware, I've gotta decide where exactly I'm ordering it from.

Well I would recomend a dual setup ;)

do a search here http://www.pricewatch.com/
with this search "amd 762".

I own a MSI K7D master.. it is one of the dual motherboards that allow multipler and frontbus overclocking (if you ever will need it)

Always use...

www.resellerratings.com

if you use pricewatch or streetprices.com.

Don't buy from a company thats not listed and review the companies you are planning to buy from. Can save you a good deal of trouble.
