Okay, I've been running around in circles for the past day trying to get this to work, so I thought I'd bounce it with the good people here to see if this can be solved (probably right under my nose too and I'm just missing it ;) )

Here's what I've done and am trying to do:
1) model a character in xsi, basic model
2) UV stamp, set up texture projection
3) export character in OBJ file from XSI to mudbox
4) import file to mudbox, sculpt out some more details
5) export base level of refined model as OBJ file from mudbox to XSI
6) make normal and displacement maps in mudbox
7) import character into xsi
8) trying to set up normal map and displacement map to put hi poly details on my low poly mesh

and that's where I'm stuck. I've seemed to have gotten the displacement to work, but I'll show that. Here's the progress in images, along with the render tree.

Just the toon textured:

With displacement:

Using the normal map from mudbox, going through the XSINormalMap node:

Same map, but now going through the bump node in the lambert:

and going through both the XSINormalMap node and the lambert for goofing around:

I'm more or less starting out and would really like some feedback. Also if there's a better way to host images and/or refine the workflow I've stated above, I'd really appreciate it.

Don't know if this had peeked anyone's interest or not, but I hate leaving it unfinished.

I had posted it in another thread, a similar situation, but I thought I'd clear what I came up with.

I exported the base mesh of the model as an OBJ file and a hi poly mesh version of it in a seperate OBJ file (Level 0 and level 3 for the "mudders" as I've noticed someone call us)

I imported the two OBJ files and used XSI's Ultimapper to make a normal map and a displacement map. I found I had to really knock the Distance setting down for making maps, and I've still yet to make a depth map to correctly get what I want from hi to low poly. I may take a different route on this yet.

I just like putting my findings up 'cause I find it's a bit hard to find answers. I've seen people make posts of similar questions throughout the net, but they're always left unanswered. So, gonna post what I come up with so someone else gets their problem solved too. ;)
