Here is something I am working on. I wasn't sure wether to post this in the 2D or 3D section, but I felt that it doesn't fall into the 3D one because this is heavily touched up in 2D afterwards. I use the 3D as a base mostly. I'm not putting emphasis on modeling and such since it is a foundation only. Anyway!:)

Arzhal is a feared god who rules upon a vast wasteland and its mysterious inhabitants. It is believed that he has sight over all of his land as only his mouth was forcefully made to materialize a long time ago during a conflict of higher beings. As such Arzhal's powers have become a mere fraction of what they once were, his voice and incantations being limited by the laws of the physical relm, yet he still strikes fear into the minds of men as minions of strange forms continue to roam through his territory, ready to snatch anyone who would dare to venture within it.

More updates to come, slowly but surely:) (wall texture is temporary, from a flickr photo, will be chanced along with many things!)

Hello there.

Wow, this image and your backstory is firing up my imagination! Nice job.

Can't wait to see this updated.

Thank you Jean!

Like I said, the updates come but at a slow pace;)

Here is an update. What happens is that I continue to work the 3D scene, so once I want to figure out where I stand I take a snapshot and draw all again over it once more from scratch in PS. Which means that what you see here will once again change in the end. When I am happy with the scene, the view, and once I feel all props/characters/etc. are present I will take the final screenshot and do the real 2D pass. Right now what you see is an indication of where I feel I will take the image, and it's a way for me to figure out what else is needed, what doesn't work well, etc.

I made the mouth more ominous too:)

Hello PhilOsirus!

Great additions to the piece. I like how the ripple detail around the mouth give it a hypnotic feel.

I think you might have overdone the pulling of the corners of the mouth a little, it looks more distressed than ominous in my opinion. Maybe you could not pull them down so much? Just slightly? But then again this being an issue of design, do what feels right to you mate.

Thank you for sharing your workflow, sounds to me like you're a real perfectionist and that's a good thing. I think I probably need to take a page out of your book and iron out all the basics before I start finishing up my pieces!

Thanks again for the comments Andrew!

I can tweak the mouth easily, I'll continue to adjust it. It might be in a "conversation" pose if I add characters in front of it, as if it was speaking to its minions, we'll see:)

The next step will be to define the floor moreso, change some textures (like the one with the angry faces on the wall, that is temporary from some temple wall photo I found on flickr), add a few props like offering plates and vases, and then figure out how I'll add characters to the scene and what they could be doing.

Here is a small concept update, just to give an idea of where I'm heading when I meant I would add some props and characters. The props and especially the characters should be of a more interesting design, but this should give more or less an idea of where I'm going:)

If integrating the characters isn't too much of hassle, and if it fits nicely with the rest of the image, I might add more of them.

I'll also have to add more patterns/details to the arches around the mouth, make them more interesting. And the bridge/ground needs to be designed too, right now it is nothing. It will probably be large cracked stone plates on top of some sort of brick/stones structure. Not sure yet.

will you be adding any fire in the rift? :)

I say u must NOT add any fire or other additional lighting to it. 'Couse u'll loose this gorgeous horrifying atmosphere.
I like what u have here. I can only suggest u to play with levels of it to darken the dark parts. For now this image looks a bit less contrast then it must be. IMHO, of course..
Go on! It will be a great picture! :applause:

Thanks for the replies!

I have problems with contrast because on my home PC, at my usual settings, the image is quite contrasted, but at work it looks much less contrasted (the blacks are more dark gray). This has always been an issue. And on the PC of the guy next to me it's even less contrasted! Argh!:p
