View Full Version : liquids i NEED help
Konstruct 04-15-2003, 03:23 AM ok so I havn`t gotten as far as to actually making the liquid, BUT I have a story board drawn out where I need to spill a cup of coffe down a guys neck hole. and if its way difficult than I need to re work some story elemnts.
now, my question is are liquids a super simple thing to do?- I don`t need realism, its a cartoony thing. but I`m wondering if I would have to do a bunch of crap in MEL. or is it simple- cool cool thats all I need to know

If you just need a simple liquid look you can use a particle emitter, and have it emit blobby surfaces. These particles will clump together to make a liquid like material. You have to play around with the particle radius and threshold to make sure the particles glob together.
If you have access to maya 4.5 unlimited you can use the new fluid effects. This will give you very realistic liquids, but its a lot harder to setup, and takes a LOng time to render.

another useful thing to remember for keeping your blobbies together is using springs!

if you can get ahold of Digital Nature Tools' P_Liquid shader, it really helps! :D

Maya fluids cannot do this.

Maya fluids cannot do this.
alternatively next limit's - realFlow can!

as pyromania has said: particles set to emit blobby surfaces. or you can bootleg it by using multiple blendshapes (for the flow of coffee out of the cup) with a soft body that has a bit of turbulence applied.
as far as maya fluids not being able to do liquids... no it cannot give the results of say Realflow or Glu3D but you can work it in such a way to give you a fluid like effect but it will cost you precious time. for example:

and if you have some extra money to spare check out Glu3D, i tried out the beta and was very impressed with the results as well as the speed, in comparison to realflow:

hope that helps.

ok so I`ve set up a scene with 2 coffe cups. one cup raises into the air and movers over the second cup and teps over,-
now would is be possible to set up a feild inside the moving cup, that pours into the second cup once it turns over?- without having to animate the particle emitier?-
what factors would I need to use to do this?-
Oh yeah I`m really new at maya and the reason I came here is because I cant find any good dynamics tutorials.

i once was after a similiar effect and got some pretty good info from this tutorial here:

Hi,
If you want send me your scene and I'll try to setup scene with glu3D. It is the fastes way I think.
cheers,
