Sha-weet!
Been meaning to try this for a while. Do we know what the licensing situation will be? Currently on Max you can run a renderfarm off one install.
And feature wise how far is it behind max??

There's a section on the chaosgroup forums where you can ask this kind of questions, even though i'd say a safe answer for the moment is "when it's ready" and "we'll see about the price" :)

I wouldn't get my hopes up. I LOVED Vray when I used Max, but I've been asking them the same thing for 4 years. Every Siggraph they seem to be close, but then you never hear anything else about it.
The company doesn't seem to really care about developing the software much more or gaining any market share, and that's really sad. If people got to try Vray, they'd be blown away. I'd use it on EVERY project I could.

I don't know anything specific about this situation, but it's not as easy as saying "ok, press this button and a maya build of my renderer is now ready." You need to devote a lot of developper hours to the project, you need to pay the developper even though you don't yet have any income coming in since the product isn't out yet, and then on top of that, maya is the most difficult 3d app out there to write an external renderer for, since it was never designed that way from the beginning.
So I doubt it's that they don't care, I'm sure they'd love to have your money :) It's probably a lot of external forces.

Hey, Corta Madera! I'm in San Rafael.
I didn't mean to sound so negative in the last post, I was just trying to add my personal experience with the developer. I really love Vray, but I have moved on because they don't seem to be pushing anymore. Every year there is a post about the Maya version and everyone gets excited, but then nothing new ever comes out.
You are right, it does take a lot to make a product like this. I wrote half of my own renderer a few years ago but had to stop when I ran out of time. It all ends up being about priorities, and I see the same issue going on with Chaosgroup. They have something great that would make money and be appreciated by the industry, but I don't see them wanting to spend the time and money to do it.
And to put it all in perspective, I think I remember hearing that it's only 2 guys doing all of the program.
Maybe this is blasphamy to say, but if they sold the code to a company that wanted to develop it more and push it to Maya, I'd be overjoyed.

Well, sometimes it has nothing to do with want :) Again, I have no knowledge about this specific situation, but I can imagine a scenerio where someone comes up to you and says "If you are willing to spend $1 million, I can promise to give you $4 million." Well, that's a fantastic return on your investment. But You don't have a million in the bank, no bank will lend you the money, so no matter how much cash you'll get out of the transaction, you can't get it because you don't have the million in the first place.
Maybe this is blasphamy to say, but if they sold the code to a company that wanted to develop it more and push it to Maya, I'd be overjoyed.
The only real way to do that would be if they sold the renderer and stopped developping it themselves. Otherwise, it's less like selling the code and more like you gain a "partner", who's building a 3d app specific bridge to your renderer. And that itself can take a lot of time, the developper will need you to make changes to the renderer core to accomadate the bridge. And everytime you develop the core, the bridge would have to be updated. It's a complex and time consuming process.
Anyways, I understand your frustration, I'm just pointing out that situations are usually not as clear cut as we'd like them to be sometimes. If only life were simple. :)

V-Ray for Maya is currently available to anyone as a free beta with both a public demo version and a full version. You can get the full version if you email us to vraymaya@chaosgroup.com (http://forums.cgsociety.org/vraymaya@chaosgroup.com) while the public demo is available from the support section on our site.
While it does not have in at all features that we want yet, it is quite useable and indeed many people are already using it; for sure it doesn't have a shiny 1.0 version label... but hey it's available and free for the moment. So I don't really see what you have to wait for.
As for development, it is certainly going on, although perhaps not at the speed that we would have liked. You, as users, can help us significantly in this process by getting involved in it.
Best regards,
Vlado
