View Full Version : normals soft/harden tools
yaz786vip 04-15-2003, 12:51 AM Hi there i am having problems with mays normals. when i use the soft tool i have problems with the border edges, i need to get rid of these lines but dont know how, can any one help me?
i have placed images to help you understand
the first one shows where the edges are hiding and the second one shows what happens when i soften the edges.
plz help!

well, why do you have border-edges in the middle of your mesh at all?! maybe, you forgot to merge some vertices in there?
If you have tried selecting the vertexs and welding them and it still doesnt work then try and look to see if the adjacent face normals are different. If the normals are different it wont let you weld.
Just a thought.

If you have border edges in the mesh the hard/soft normals can't help you get rid of them, if this is what you want the tool to do.
So yeah, the only way to get rid of this when you soften normals is to weld the border edges...

Try Polygons -> Cleanup, with Non-Manifold geometry switched on and all Remove Geometry options selected. If you've got non-manifold geometry in there (easy to do without even knowing), you'll never be able to weld those edges and vertices. Try welding and smoothing again after the Cleanup.

I'll hazard the guess that some of the normals on your faces are reversed which prevents you from truly stitching any edges together ...
