Intel (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/business/companies/intel_corporation/index.html?inline=nyt-org) plans to announce a family of microprocessor chips on Monday that it says will speed the availability of high-definition video via the Internet.

Intel’s new family, made up of 16 processors, would first be used in servers and high-end desktops that compress the video. To get better video compression, Intel has added a set of 46 instructions it calls SSE4 to the new microprocessors. The new instructions would make possible a new generation of servers that enhance the compression of digital video.

This will be interesting, since I think this is the first non-central cpu instruction set that Intel has released publicly since Apple switched to Intel architecture. In the past MS always scoffed at Intel for adding these technologies and refused to develop their OS to take advantage of them, because it represented "A Threat to the Importance of Windows" With Vista being greeted with venom regularly and Leopard doing so well, it will be interesting to see whether Microsoft changes it's position and if they do, how they spin it. Apple loves secondary cpu technologies.

not really.. MS hasn't scoffed at Intel for adding SSE instructions, quite the opposite in fact. Other companies throughout the years have applauded and integrated intel instructions into their Windows-based apps. Since wow, what... Win98/NT? Time to catch up. AMD has also added them in an effort to be compatible and to keep up with Intel. The new instructions have been in development for years, so it's only a coincidence that Apple is around and is using Intel now. They didn't do it for Apple's sake. That would be extremely short-sided and ignorant to think so. Also, it's too early to tell how Leopard is doing as it's only been out for a couple of weeks, and even still, some apps won't work with it thanks to Apple killing support for the "old" compiler (Nuke for one). Apple loves what? They've only recently enjoyed what Intel has had to offer, so how far back are you planning on quantifying that statement. Please don't let your cuddle-fest with Apple blind you to reality. WHo's spinning what?
