View Full Version : MAP question (2): Control areas to emit particles??

Hi again! :)

My second map question of the day:

Is it possible to use a map to indicate where a mesh should emit particles?

Ie, something along the lines of: black areas don't emit, gray areas emit at half rate, and white areas emit at full rate.

Thanks in advance for any advice! :wavey:

Cheers,

Howdy !!

well i don't know, i'd be glad to know in fact, but still there is a way to define which faces of an object emitts particles, using a SuperSpary for exemple, make it object-based, define a face selection in your object, and check "use subobject selection" or something the likes in the particles Generation rollout i guess.
Won't affect rate or way they are emitted though.

There's no "proper" way of controlling that with the default MAX particles as far as I know. It's theorized that MAX6 will change that though.

In the mean time 3rd party plugins such as Thinking Particles does it. Likely Particle Studio as well, but I've never seen that one in action.

Use a VolSelect to select Faces with the option use texture at the Surface features section to select faces in function of a map(in this case a bitmap), then check the Use selected objects checkbos of a Parray to emit the particles from the selection of the object. No density or velocity control though. Matterwaves just do what you want(and is integrated with thinking particles i think)

Thanks everybody! You're great! :bounce:

I think I'll go with Reality3D's advice - see, I want to be able to animate those emitting areas... ;)

See ya,
