View Full Version : How would I select the polys a certain material covers?
boxcrash 04-14-2003, 05:11 AM OK maybe it is just late, but I have applied materials to various selected polys.
How can I select the polys that the material covers/applied to?
I collapsed the stack and saved, really don't feeling like going back and individualy selecting them over again.
Thanx for any help, plug-ins, etc.:)

In the material editor, hit the <select by material> button (small button on the right side of the materials). It will give you a pop up box showing which items have that material applied, and they are already selected, just hit ok.

hummm.....you're right...it is late. I mis-read your post. I'm not sure if that will work for just certain poly's of an object or not. But hey, it's worth a shot I guess. Appologies for the wasted bandwidth if it doesnt work.

I tried that and knew about it, but my character is one mesh with about 6 or 7 materials applied to various grouped "hand/mouse selected" faces/polys, so that does not work.
Thanx for the quick reply.:)

Should'nt you be able to just select the material ID in the the EP panel?

If you use the material ID in the lower panel/rollout of Edit Poly it sometimes acts weird and keeps selecting the same face no matter what ID you input, but I have still to mess with it a bunch to maybe trick it to work or whatever.
Thanx.

You mean while using the "select by material ID" function?
That won't cause errors or anything strange. Check each part of the multi-subobject material. Click a poly with one material on it, and then look at it's ID. Then, use the select by material ID function and input that number. All parts of the model with that material will be selected.

I got it working fine, I was using the spanner previously and seem to be getting some weird results, with the "clear selection" selected then spanning to a unused ID it would go back to default mat., then if it was unchecked and I spanned to another ID it would select that materials polys as well as the next ones but also inherit that material to the next ID and polys, or something like that it was odd.
But I understand it now and have it working just fine, Thanx.:)
