View Full Version : what should I model next?
Exterminator89 04-13-2003, 11:51 PM what should my next project be? I want to be able to do organic stuff like fantasy type characters like orcs, elves, druids, undead etc. I also want to be able to make awesome fantasy weapons like swords, battle axes, staves etc... so if anyone models organic stuff what should I model to work my way up to being able to model people?

Gosh, it's time to stop asking, and start modeling! Be creative, use your imagination and try. Of course you are going to have failures, but that is how you learn. Kind of senseless to ask others what you should model, model whatever comes to mind. :shame:

well... I was just wondering what should I 3d model to work my way up to 3d modeling people, I think I will go 3d model an orc with a battle axe :buttrock: too bad I am not good enough yet to 3d model something like that

fantasy weapons are easier than you think...throw in a box with "edit poly", some nice lens effects from video post(if you wish)..and there you go...they're fairly easy...
thats unless you want to go into texturing and stuff...thats probably the hardest part from all of them.

i'm staying away from organic until i can model any kind of object in this world...so far i'm limited a bit in that category...aka i cant make cars or stuff like that but i can make low poly planes or space ships...now wheels..lol
i'm getting there:bounce:

Exterminator, max has a tutorial included in the help files where you model some tubby character, get started with that, it's not hard at all.:hmm:

Not to mention the massively helpful sticky thread at the top of this forum with a tutorial that pretty much helps you make a fully realised 3d character from start to finish.
Have a look at the tutorial all those guys/gals are doing in the thread with the words "Calling all noobs" in the title.
I can't recommend it enough for someone just starting out. It even covers weapons.

Hey Lil Buddy,
You may wanna try this little book called "The Little Book of Low Poly Modeling with 3ds max 4" It's a cool set of quick tutorials that will help you make a VERY simple and fast person. After you have made your character, you can use the techniques to make it more and more realistic. The best part is that it's pretty cheap. I recommend it for beginners
I bought mine at http://www.maxhelp.com/

PS. Don't worry about some of the guys ragging on you. I have RTFM on many occasions, and I personally don't like them that much. Some of us just weren't born with L33T modelling skills:shrug:

Thanks Tex3D, I had a computer magazine with all the shirts with computer jokes on them... and one of the T-Shirts said "RTFM" I asked my brothers what it stood for and they didnt know, so could you tell me what it means/stands for? thx.. I was just wondering if you have a model of what you ended up with after finishing the book, if so could you post a picture of it please? thx

It means "Read The F***ing Manual"
It comes from people getting pissed at warez monkeys that download programs and then ask a million stupid questions on the forum boards.

Here endeth the lesson:thumbsup:
BTW: I'm at work,(I design machines in 3D) so no I dont have the model with me. Either way it won't be anything impressive on here, but the point is to learn how to extrude and move polys and all that jazz. It is a VERY simple method, and most people here would probably laugh at it, but I had a hard time understanding what to do, and this cheap little book for some reason made sense to me.

ok thanks.. did you read the last part of my message about if you have a model that the book comes with or if YOU have a model that you made according to the book, could you maybe send me a picture or send me a model or something so I know what I am buying to learn what I am going to do.
EDIT: ok cool, I will look into it

Good Luck to you!
Hopefully it'lll help you along in your modelling. Some people learn well out of books and some don't. If you learned something and it gets you on your way then it's worth the $ 21.50

Keep us posted on how it goes and don't be afraid to go BEYOND the tutorials!:buttrock:
