View Full Version : Modeling Bevel Gears

Hi all,

See attached image please for reference to a set of bevel gears.

I'm using 3ds Max 2008.

I'm having a hard time with this. I did "okay" modeling the smaller gear (beveling top polygons, pushing/pulling, etc...) but when I started the second (larger) gear it became obvious quick that the teeth of the 2 gears would not mate well. May be some math (yikes!) I need to apply here?

Any tips for creating this set of gears? I'm still a bit new to modeling and my bag of tricks is pretty weak. ;)

Thanks!
Daf

No one care to jump in here? ;)

The easiest way to get the amount of teeth right is to cound them in the picture. Then make two cylinders with these amounts (or a multiple) of segments and right diameters and you're good to go.

Keep in mind that the teeth are not of the same shape on both gears. The teeth on the larger gear are wider and the gaps between the teeth on the smaller gear are bigger. Just a quick observation.

Thank you for your reply. :)

I'm finding this particular modeling task very difficult - I think it would be better suiting for AutoCad or another such application.
