Well, "they" tell me to stop lurking so I guess I'll post some stuff, it's pitiful, which is why I haven't posted it, but I guess it can't hurt:bounce:

I'm working my way through all the 3dsmax tutorials so I decided to modify the spaceship a bit to my liking, still working on it though.

Before I knew what I was doing  I used the MSmooth button on the wing guns, so that resulted in some triangular polys before I applied the meshsmooth modifier:annoyed:

After I'm finished it all have to take a stab at texturing..that should be interesting :p

when your modelling anything, try and make sure u always use 4 sided polys. becuase when u get to meshsmooth, you'll find a better result.

theres a bunch of stuff on this technique somewhere. try www.3dtotal.com

Thanks:) I was actually told just that, but I'd already used the MSmooth, I suppose I can manually convert the triangular polys to quads though.

yeah.

if your using max 5, i suggest u use Edit Poly. Its a bunch of fun, and u can add sub divisional smooth on it. just scroll down in the edit poly parameters panel, and open it up. Active "use NURBS Subdivison" and bang the display itirations up to 2. it works the same as meshsmooth, but its a bit easier to turn it off, and its a bit easier to work on your mesh.

But thats just some advice, cos i used to go back and forward turning meshsmooth on and off and stuff. Now i just do everything within edit poly.

theres a good tutorial on www.3dtotal.com about how to make a robot. its got some good advice about getting the best out of mesh before applying a meshsmooth.

Thanks, I am using Max5, I'll try that out.

ERm, do you mean NURMS?

thats the one! yeah!

u can also put the render iterations up too. so its low poly in viewport, but when yah render, its all smooth...... If thats in way intrresting.....;)

Hmm, do you mean the robot tutorial first in the list?

no. i aplogise. when it comes to links, i'm just plain lazy.....

Awesome, I'll check that out right now, thanks bud:beer:

I suppose if I actually want to increase the number of manipulatable polys i have to use the MSmooth button?

ninjacore
04-13-2003, 09:29 PM
yeah. theres a Msmooth button within the edit poly parameters. but remeber, u can still manipulate your low poly mesh whilst using the nurms smooth. when u turen the nurms on, yout mesh will go yellow!

Yup yup, just wanted some more polys, the control level was to low:)

Don't mind me if I keep posting here, I'm going to use it as a sort of log:)

I figured out that by deleting some un-needed vertices along the cockpit the NURMS smoothing looks much better! I also fixed some polys on the wings so they are once again quads:cool:

Well, I have a small question, if I wish to model the inside of the cockpit, what is the best thing to do with the canopy? Just remove it for now and put it back later?

ninjacore

yeah, detach all the canopy polygons as a new object. then in your main mesh, make a nice hole to put a seat and all the gear. it will be be better to split stuff like this into individual objects.

Wow...That jet is awesome. I like the slightly reversed wingtips, and how the rocket launchers/missiles on the wingtips, too.

Also, nice side and top air intakes too. But, personally, Ii think having two sloped top fins would be better, or three fins:

..___\_|_/___..
^""""'\\//'""""'^

(if you get what I mean)

Anyway, This is already a fabulous piece of 3D art, since I couldn't do anything like this for beans. :p

Overall, great design. Can't wait until it's textured!

Thanks for the feedback:) I like the fin idea, I'll see how it looks. I decided that the side air-intakes are now going to be torpedo launchers (the winqtip things are lasers) as this is a space vehical and really has no use for air-intake:P

I'm not really happy with the launchers, but they're comming along. All the feedback and help is much appreciated:buttrock:
