View Full Version : wings polymodeling and boxmodeling
waterhycinth 04-13-2003, 07:23 PM ok i'm some what familiar with wings and i know it's possible to do box modeling because all you do is start with a cube and work from there.... but my question here is how do I go about polymodeling? i though polymodeling was where you start out with like a flat polygon (might be considered 2d polygon) and then extrude and stuff from there... am i wrong?

You can't.
At least, not yet (maybe, I don't know if it's in the plans).
Poly by poly modelling is not possible in Wings, the maths that Wings is based on won't allow it, if I understand correctly. Wings works with solid shapes and always will.
However! If you select one or more faces and extract region you will create a 2d (sort of!) object. You could then delete the original object and work from the "2d" object. Offhand I can't think of any reason to do this though!

hmm... yes it seems that it would be sort of redundat to delete that part then extrude it again...but i keep seeing post in this forum about polymodeling and stuff...maybe their referring to the fact that you edit polys while modelling...not sure
I think you're mixing up polymodeling with poly by poly. Polygonal modeling is AFAIK used of any kind of modeling with polygons while poly by poly is a method where you build your model polygon by polygon just as boxmodeling is a method where the model is built by extruding and cutting detail to the model.
I personally don't like the name boxmodelling and prefer to call it digital sculpting :)

The terms I like using are volume modeling and shell modeling.
shell modeling being the poly-by-poly method to basically wrap and conform a shell of polys to some imaginary 3D volume.
volume modeling aka digital sculpting being the method where the surface is always closed and shape is best formed by focusing on creating volume first then moving to detail.

ok thanks yall for the reply...i think i understood all that..hehe
I don't mind the term boxmodeling... but yea, it is actually digital sculpting isn't it...
I always start out from a cube... period... sit down, pop a cube on screen and see where I go with it... if nothing then plan b, open a WIP and see what happens... if I find myself having to resort to plan c then I go for a ride or something... but yea, this is my approach to individual model creation, while keeping in mind to make enough doodles relative to eventually make some scenes and do some ani stuff... all in good time :)
Just boxing stuff out ya know... :) hahaha
