I'd like to implement a Non-Linear Animation system into Cinema 4D. By NLA, I mean 'animation layers' whereby animation, on different layers, of the same properties can be mixed in the end results while remaining separate editable entities.

Amazingly, searches of the ACM Digital Library don't result in any papers related to 3D NLA systems (!). I have not yet tried IEEE, but suspect the same vast empitness of results. Is there some codename other than 'animation layers' and 'non-linear animation' that is used for this? Even Google comes up blank (with its usual preference for every tutorial and application that uses the terms instead).

I'd be grateful for any links discussing how to implement such a system.

Thank you very much,

Robert

I think 'mixing' or 'blending' (possibly 'additive blending') would be better search terms.

Searching for publications is an art in itself. If you stripped away the fancy terms that people use, papers wouldn't look half as impressive..

I feel your pain though, been there a great number of times myself

Thanks for the tips.

Yep, it is a pain as nobody agrees on terminology, mostly making it up as they go. Amazing how terms can be covered by so many disciplines. Papers on robotics, internet, depression (?), and tons of other odd areas were returned on these keywords. One problem with 'non-linear' (even explicitly adding 'animation') is the expected bulk of papers on anything non-linear in mathematical/physical terms results - yeeks! ;)

Will try again anon.
