In this tutorial, he uses boris filters but I don't have those on my computer.
I pretty much get the animating part where u parent the text to the null, etc but how can i make my text appear "concave"?

Well, you buy some plugins... Sorry, this can't be done with vanilla AE. Even Jerzy's (maltaanon) fake will fail as soon as you need to see the text from more than two sides. There's surely enough tools out there, like the mentioned Boris ones, Zaxwerks Invigorator or, which is the cheapest alternative, Panopticum Anima Text 3D.
