Here's something I did with PS. The character's still in silhoutte, and I started off with the background first, as I love painting tree barks and earth cracks.

I believe in "honesty is the best policy, " and you need a lot more work.

mmm i really think the style suits the pic the only critique that i have is that the mountains in the back are much too blurry they really ruin the whole pic

I think what yowchan is doing is laying in the base colors the 'blur' in the mountains is simply that, simple colorations with no detail. If you look at the tree, you see that detail is being added as he goes along, the tree is blurry at the top, but highly detailed as he finishes it. Personally, i think this will be a beautiful image when it's complete, the detail you've got on the ground area and the base of the tree is amazing. What tools are you using? Wacom? Or just a mouse? Good job, can't wait to see this finished.

Thanks guys for the comments, makes me want to finish this painting at one go, but has other commitments right now. Will do them ofter office hours. :P

Kamul:
The background was not completed yet :P Trying to get a feel of the color scheme before I start to block the details out.

CelticArtist:
Yup, it's a Wacom. Would love to finish it soon :)

Adding more details to the branches...still thinking what to work on next.

since you asked :) get some reference photo's of old gnarled trees, you'll notice that the branches don't go straight out like that, the wood grain wraps around it in kind of spiral pattern, right now it simply looks kind of like the tree trunk is curving over, which doesn't seem quite right. the texturing is still great though, you would be an amazing texture artist for 3d if you haven't done any of that yet. Good job, keep going :)

I kind alike the look of the tree, It makes it look like the wind has forced is over through the years. Maybe he isnt trying to make it look like a certain tree. very good work. you've got talent

CelticArtist:
Thanks for pointing that one out! I felt something wasn't right, but I kept on anyway, but now that you mentioned it, yup, the branches could do with some "twisters".

Yup, I do 3D too, most of the time modeling and texturing. Would love to do some animation, but my rigging sucks, so most of the time, that's where I stopped.

Will work on the rest tomorrow. Work is killing me :P

Nimue:
Thanks! That's exactly how I want it, the swordsman will be standing on the hilltop, with the wind blowing.

Thanks for the comments...i am looking at 3d for the swordsman as an alternative, not sure if i have the time to model one.

Right now, just want to get my background props ready. Saving the best(worst) for last...:p

I have to say that this is an amazing job!
I would also like to thank you very much for posting the wip's progress. I have always wonder how a scene is started in PS and now I know how to go about it. I finally might be able to try a 2D scene myself now. A question if I may? When Celtic made the comment about the limbs and you perfectly ammended them, did you redo the branch or did you smudge about the existing one to make it look so? Thanks again! Keep up the amazing work! I cant wait to see more on this. :buttrock:

PS: I wonder what spirogyro has to say now...*wink,wink..nudge, nudge* :D

Thanks for the comments. My method might not be the only way to go about starting a scene in PS. :) But anyway, I am glad that you find it helpful.

Yah, Celtic's comment woke me from my attention to detail, I was too focus on the textures that I forgot to pay attention to the form of the branches. So, I scrubbed the branch off and start a new leaf (pun intended). (things would be alot more easier if it were in 3D...)

Okie, here's a color preview of the sky...looks a little gloomy...will work on it tomorrow.

The gloomy sky is actually pretty cool. it goes good with the tree. and depending on how you make the swordsman, it might work out for you to keep it gloomy

Only one thing I can see. The bacground mountains seem to be on the same plain as the foreground tree. Maybe desaturating the colors a bit...maybe a touch of blur..and maybe some white haze for atmospheric depth.

Nimue

yea some haze in by the mountains would give it a real good look.

Here's an updated sky rendering. Added a few rays, not sure if it looks weird. :D

Yah, having some problems with the back and foreground planes. Will work on that on the next update :P

Glad i could help, the branches look great now, the whole thing is looking amazing, i love the way it is heavily textured, but still has a soft feel to it, like a faint haze over the whole thing. good job so far, i'm really lovin the style of this, it's frontpage materal once it's done imo :)

Lookin really cool, can't wait to see the swordsman. Is he going to be a crouching tiger hidden dragon li mu bia(forget spelling) or a monk with a broad sword...or something else?

Apologize for the slow update...finally get a break from the tough schedule at work...

Must finish this one (clenching fist...) :p

This one's a rough guide on where I am gonna put this swordsman :)

Will paint him in soon.

Wow, nice WIP.

I bought a tablet a few months back. But for some reason the penstroke will stutter in PS. Any ideas? I'd love your work and please keep it up. I want to see it finished!

Sorry people, this latest update hasn't got much addition to it...just some minor touches to the overall look.

I have decided not to put in the swordsman and leave the painting as it is.

So, I hereby conclude this WIP, it's literally finished (although a painting is never finished).

Thanks, C&C are welcomed!

Cheers,
YC
