View Full Version : depth of field in mental ray
Jit3d 11-04-2007, 05:44 PM hey everybody im new to the board, ive got a question regarding using depth of field with mental ray. it seems that every time i use it, the depth of field is of low quality, its grainy and doesnt have a nice smooth blur to it. Using the scanline randerer i was able to get that smoothness with multiple passes. Is there such an issue with mental ray? :hmm:
thanks!

3ds max pass based depth of field is not physically accurate. mental ray depth of field is raytraced and as a result strongly depends on samples, the more DoF you have the more samples you need (since at larger or closer distances the samples are spread out alot more).
This means that you simply need to increase the amount of samples - at high cost of rendering times. To do that go to Render tab, and from there to Renderer's settings. It's the samples per pixel setting, increase minimum to around 16 and maximum to around 64 and you should end up with alot more non-grainy DoF (depending on how much DoF you are calculating).
Alternative is to add DoF in post by using z-depth.

hi for mor DoF sampel can you use the mia_lens_bokeh or a external Shader for example DOF Lens Plus or BA DoF from Binary Alchemy.

thanks guys for the advice, i figuered it out, i have another problem however, it seems that in some scenes the depth of field doent work at all..in other words when i enable it.. i enable depth of field (mental ray) for a camera in my scene but there is no change the camera behaves as before.. :banghead: does it have to do with certain textures possibly or models?
thanx!

Dof depends on the f-stop value. Lower values give a blurrer effect; for physical accurate results you have to make sure that your scene is in real world units.

hey everybody,
got another depth of field question.. im getting this white noise around the edges of objects when depth of field is enabled.. i posted a picture of an outdoor scene im working on as an example. It's strange because without the DOF the bright white around the edges is not visible. Im sure it's some lighting setting.. but not sure what..
im using a daylight system with mental ray, logarithmic exposure: on, with external deselected. the sunlight is set to IE sun and IE sky.
thanks

try MR Sun and MR Sky
