I have tried to merge 3 of my characters into one other scene, but all 3 characters geometry inherit one bones' hiearchy.

Hiearchy looks like this:

Reference
Geo Null
Hips (bone)
Spine (bone)
etc...

I tried renaming the Reference and Geo nulls to 3 different names that correspond to my characters. This did not help. I did not try renaming each bone.

Would i have to rename everything? So for example if i have 3 characters named A, B, and C, would i have to name:

A Reference
A Geo
A Hips
A Spine
etc...

... and same for B and C?

Anyone have any ideas?

Did you mange to find a way to rename all the bones at the same time or you found another solution for this? I was looking for a way to rename whole hierarchies and did not manage to find one. Presumably it would be a Python script, but I'm not familiar with Python scripting.

I certanly hope there is another way then just renaming all the bones one by one:shrug:

What you do is when you go to merge you will see a merge option dialog popup. You will see to the left some check marks in two columns.

What you need to do is figure out whcih assets you need to protect or merge completely, then click on the check marks to set it to a red circle, or a circle with arrows.

I'm not sure what i did to get it right. I think you'll have to experiment with that.

Search for "Merge" in the help menu. There are detailed explainations on how to merge scenes.

On merge, you have a series of options available to you, these allow you to filter the assets from the incoming file. You can either Merge them (search for like names and replace) or append them (change the incoming file name if there is a name clash) or discard them. Merge will look through the file and replace out any objects of like name with the incoming data. Append will change the name for any name clashes. For any unknown objects they should be loaded as-is.

One hint, if you would like to merge, append, or discard all, right click on the top of the column where it says Element and Animation, and you should see a menu that will allow you to append, merge, or discard all elements.

Hope this helps,
Kevin

Also, there is a couple ways to rename entire hierarchies. In the Navigator window, right-click on the top of the hierarchy and select "Select Branches". Now right-click to rename... this will change the entire hierarchy.

I would however recommend not doing this for a character to distinguish from one to the other. I would suggest using namespaces instead. These are found in Edit>Add/Remove Namespace, or by right clicking on an object.

Cheers,
Kevin
