This is my problem, I am 14 years old, love to 3d model in 3dsmax.... but there is just one thing, I suck. I dont ever want to give it up, I want to become good, and I know it wont happen over night, and on other forums COUGH maxforums COUGH people say stuff like if you cant do it then 3d modeling isnt right for you.... that is great enouragement huh? well... I want to eventually be able to 3d model awesome fantasy weapons and characters... but I suck. I was just wondering if anyone has had this expeirience themselves or know of other people that have, if so what did you or they do? Like I said, I really love 3d modeling and want to be good at it and never ever want to give it up... if anyone could please help with my problem I will be very grateful.... thanks.

P.S. When I am older I would want to make models for games... maybe at Blizzard or something. Plus, I have a project at school due in a week or 2, probably 2 weeks, it is a career project. And guess what I have? yup, graphic design for games. you have to do research about it and I would really like to make a really cool picture to impress my teachers and friends. thx again for you people that can help me.

well...not to disencourage you..thats why only few people have constant job in this..we can all dream on how and what to make, making them is the hard part...

but..here's the thing...

i was like you...i was fidlling with max but i couldn't get anything going...so i saw myself going to school, playing games and looking at other people's work.

when i got to be 16 i went to an intro course to 3Ds Max 4...figure has it i was the most advanced guy in my class...and while the others were trying to make anything like a shape resembling a spaceship or whatever they wished for their final project, i was adding my Lens effects and finishing touches on mine.

so to you i'd say this...you're 14..you don't have the patience that everyone else has(even i still dont have it enough) to sit in front of the computer and try o model something for 10 hours straight(some that would take pro's 2 minutes to about 10 minutes...so just "play" with max from time to time...not every day necessarily but when you feel like it..and eventually you'll learn all of it's icons and stuff...

school will help you...for example chemistry ot something like that will help you in the material editor where you have to combine all kinds of stuff to get what you wanted in the end..i never took it but that's how i look at it when i try to make my "colors"...

whenever i have something t model and then map and so on i break the steps down just like in my math class(which i failed..lol) or my programming class..

dont try to do too much too soon because you'll quite faster than you'll even know you started...do it periodicall and you'll learn just as everyone else did...and forget about fantasy weapons and stuff...at first try to learn basics like booleans or what lens effects are...

some tutorials on this site are great...also the VTM's(video cds) from www.3dbuzz.com can healp you a great deal...you're only 14..remember that...some kids your age want o be something and then after 1 month change their minds...i knew i did...then i remained stuck on this because i did it mostly for fun and because it required me to actually think of what and how am i doing whatever i may want to model

just like the subject says don't give up... im 16 and like you I have had times where I wanted to give up... cg is requires lots of skill and patience... things that develop over time, its not something you can get right off the bat.

So try again... try until you can't then kick back and try again later... take it easy. Over time you will look back at your artwork and say "Geez, did I really do that, wow... I really changed!"

just take it slow... try some tutorials... and whenever there is something you don't get or can't do right... ask! That's what this community is about. :)

aight thanks guys, I will take it slow, but... I have been 3d modeling in max for about 2 years... I know all the stuff like boleans, lens flares, special effects with fog and fire, particle systems... oh yeah, I have a question, what do dummys do? plus I have hard time creating details, like on this calculator, I have the hardest time trying to make the curved line about 2/3 of the way up, and also the buttons and curved on the edges, should I do meshsmooth or what?.

meshsmooth will smoothen and give more of a curve feel to the object..so that might work..as for getting it 2 3rds up..u can use the vertices or the edges/polygons themselves to do it...shouldn't be that hard..or maybe you dont have enough vertices?:surprised

looks good..although the "n" button seem not to be all round..and the "=" button a bit crooked from that angle...but it looks good:buttrock:
