Why is it that the AOL site never works on any computer I try it? I hate it so much. I hope they put this on quicktime.com soon.

Does this not feel generic and formulamatic to anyone?
Ah well, at least it promises to be a lot more than B Movie.

Yeah...now this is something I'm really liking. For the record though [totally random] I think Surf's Up is seriously underrated.

Call me crazy, but I think this is a pretty bold statement to make when its pretty safe to say you know almost nothing of the story, not many outside DWA do. It irks me when some consider that Dreamworks has in fact done some "formulaic" storytelling in the past, and judge the future on such things. This trailer gives hardly any information specifically concerning the story of the movie ... and after all is not story king? Once you see the movie and then feel it is still "generic and formulaic", then I will grant you that opinion, but not before seeing it and experiencing the story it has to tell. Something tells me that not many will be using those two words to describe this film when they see it in theaters.
I'm just sayin'.

I agree with you that storywise there are still a lot of possibilities. And I sincerely do hope this film will surprise me.
But the little information the trailer gives us already points in what I think is the wrong direction to go. Yes, story is king, but, and this is something people who just copied that phrase don't understand, the plot should be character driven, meaning that the characters should be interesting and unique.
The protagonist in this trailer is, again, a star actor playing himself, doing his same routine in the form of a witty (furry) animal in an outcast role. The jokes are nothing we haven't seen before. It worked with Shrek, because it was fresh and I admit Shrek 2 was even better. I liked Madagascar and Over the Hedge when I saw them for the first time, but they wear out very fast.
I guess it's very hard to stay inventive. Pixar must work really hard.
But the little information the trailer gives us already points in what I think is the wrong direction to go.
Could you please elaborate on that.

Geez man, turn it down a notch.
Check the movie out first then come back and tell us what you think can be improved.

Pixar must work really hard.
This statement alone shows me that you really have a lot to learn about the feature animation industry. Knowing what I know regarding this industry and the players in it, I would hesitate to say that any of the hundreds of artists and technical directors at Dreamworks, or BlueSky, or anywhere else are working any less hard at their craft than the fine folks at Pixar.
Its clear that the counsel in my previous post has fallen on deaf ears, so I'll check out from this particular discussion. Have at it gentlemen.

Wow, long toes...
I didn't mean to say people working at Dreamworks do not work hard, so don't feel offended. And I do have experience in the animation industry, so please refrain from personal attacks on that account. My point is that to me Dreamworks seems to render the same ideas for a while now, while I see Pixar making effort to keep on bringing fresh ideas to the medium.
Again, a trailer is a mean to advertise a film. People are going to make the decision to go see the film or not based on the trailer. So if a trailer shows me an old idea in a new wrapping, I have a right to feel dissappointed since I have a passion for the medium.
If there are any more Dreamworkers in the room who feel personally offended, don't be. You have a right to be proud of your work. I think the visuals look beautiful, the designs are nice, especially the sensei, and the animation is very good. I was just hoping for a fresh idea. But like I said, I liked Madagascar and Over the Hedge the first time I saw them, so I will probably go see this one as well.
Maybe my taste buds are over stimulated after Ratatouille, I don't know...
Could you please elaborate on that.
I did:
The protagonist in this trailer is, again, a star actor playing himself, doing his same routine in the form of a witty (furry) animal in an outcast role. The jokes are nothing we haven't seen before.
I like it, I think it has a nice clean look, and it feels like fun.
I love the mantis, and the panda seems quite funy.
Maybe it is again a furry animal film with the same old jokes, but in my opinion as long as it is entertaining its ok for me.
I do wish anyway that we could see some more mature high budget animated films someday soon.....but right now this is what we have and what sells.
I really have no problem with cartoon films for everyone in the family, as I work on one of those right now, they are fun, entertainig and they make money, so everyone is happy I guess :).
Everybody is Kugfu fighting!, yeah!

I thought the animation looked fantastic. I really liked the squash and stretch in madagascar but it looks even more refined here. It lends itself to making the martial arts look a bit more kinetic. I sure that presents it's own set of challenges, keeping the geometry looking natural while it bends out of proportion.
As for more mature films, well, Beowulf is out soon! I'm going to absorb both of these movies on release.

Haha!
I've heard more employees from Dreamworks pledging this film has originality. Maybe it's just how the trailer is cut (it has the song 'Kung Fu Fighting', how cheesy is that??).
Anyway, I'm still sincerely hoping to be surprised by this one.

My question was not chip on the shoulder, and yeah, I got that, I just would like to hear more of if, or more in depth.
"star actor playing himself" is maybe definition of hollywood actors, mainly because most of the audience like them just like that, so that they even vote for them!
I would also say there is very few jokes left there which we haven't seen yet, but then good jokes can make you laugh anyway over and over again, as long as they are good.

That's very true. That's why it's so unoriginal.

Ratatouille was full of fresh humour. It brought character driven comedy to the screen instead of mostly written gags.

It boggles my mind that as a student you would come here to dismiss the work of hundreds of artists after seeing less than a minute of footage.
How do you expect to learn anything if you think you have all of the answers?

I'm excited about this movie. I don't have any idea what the story or anything about it is but... it's dreamworks and it has cool voicetalent.
I didn't know people actually thought this way. Yuh see, those would be my top reasons for why it's going to suck.
Dreamworks films, they're very Hollywood, superficial, no real substance. It's just what they do. I guess they do that better than anyone. And when they sell them they always make such a big deal of plugging their big celebrity voice talent. I don't know the inside runnings of that studio, but the impression one always gets is that no one with strong artistic/storytelling vision has any real power. I'm sure they have input, but ultimately the big decisicions are made by someone else. That may not be so, but that's the impression I get.
No disrespect to the animation crew, that work is top notch, Pixar quality stuff.
I'm sure anyone who liked Shrek, Over the Hedge, Sharktale, Sinbad, Madagascar and the rest will find plenty to like here. Anyone looking for more sincere, original, heartfelt or genuinely funny storytelling is looking in the wrong place. Dreamworks has been pretty consistant at being Dreamworks.

It boggles my mind that that's what you read out of my posts.
Stop reading the opinion of one as a personal attack on the work of hundreds. If you reread my posts you will see that I'm merely dissappointed that this trailer seems to render the same ideas. The only person I can think of who could (could not should) take that personally is Mr. Katzenberg.
I'm not claiming to have all the answers and yes, I am still learning. Learning is best done by learning from mistakes, mostly your own, but also someone else's (no, I'm not saying this film is a mistake). I'm sure you picked that up at AM. Recognizing what exactly you like and dislike, what you think works and what doesn't, is a major part of that.
Dear Daan Breinmeester Velsink,
Personally, I'm really looking forward to Kung Fu Panda.

I'm sincerely happy for you that you have something to look forward to. This trailer just didn't give me the spark the trailers of Ratatouille and Wall-E gave me, but I'm still in anticapation of the final product.

Hahaha! In my post above I replied to your post, because you addressed me so directly. It's only now that I realized you went through all the trouble of registering a new user just to expose my real name.
You could have just asked me to post my name (besides, I've posted it on these boards before, so it's easy to find). I'm not trying to hide behind anonimity, because I'm sincere in my opinions. I'm here to stay on top of the news in the animation industry and to discuss it. I'm not here to offend people or bash their work, although there are always people that take negative criticism personally.
So, please, next time be sincere and refrain from such childish methods.

Shrek wasn't original with substance? Personally, I felt it was one of the most original cg movies ever made. The jokes were fresh (one of the few cartoon movies that actually make me laugh out loud), the story was fun and inventive, and the character designs and animation were out of this world. I have no clue how you came up with that movie for your list. I probably wouldn't even be in CG if it wasn't for Shrek.
