View Full Version : For Clement and Wipix
BigAl3D 11-02-2007, 03:51 PM After visiting your site, I figure you guys would have a great opinion on this. Since many of us are trying hard to learn character animation, what advice could you share with us on the best way to UNDERSTAND the tools in MOCCA 3, not just read what each tool does?
In other words, I want to learn WHY I need a pole vector and when I should use another tool. When should I use joints versus an IK spline? It's the understanding WHY that I'm struggling with and don't see in most tutorials or books. I have the "Cinema 4D 10 Workshop" by Arndt von Koenigsmarck (which is fantastic), but it doesn't go too deep into character animation "theory."
I really like 3D Kiwi over at C4dcafe.com. I just need more! I really like your character's movement and style. Thanks for your help.

Have a look at these tutes from cactus dan.
http://www.c4dportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2501
They use his own toolset but the theory can be applied to any rigging tools, the best thing about these tutes is that he actuly explains the why and how of the tools and uses, + extra mini tutes on things from topolagy, rotations, expresso etc. so far these are the most comprehensive tutes on rigging princibles iv seen for cinema. hes not all done yet but working on each part.

for the why I think you need to simply look beyond just cinema 4d material. the tools work a little differently from app to app but the theory is all the same. I think clement, cactus dan and myself have all learned a lot from maya and max users. I know we all see examples of setups now regardless of what app and sit down and figure out how to do them in cinema now too.

Dan's tutorials are definitely the best ressource you will find to answer the "why", he's very clear when it comes to explaining the principles used in his rigs.

Hello BigAl3D :) , well to learn the tools , first check the manual and the examples ( like the characters in the mocca.lib in the R10 content ;) )
For myself , I'm not programer and I don't know any other software .. but I see the rigging tools ( any package ) like 'lego technics' .. you just need to understand what tool make what etc .. and what you can do mixing them ..etc and things come naturally :)
If you really want to progress quickly, I would advice you to follow a formation or tuts made by my mentors :
Cactus Dan (has made lot of tuts /example .. check c4dportal.com
Fluffy (> both CDtools and mocca / makes Skype online formations.. and lot of jokes for free !)
and Kai Perdersen ( > The Mocca man ! / lot of big tuts on Cineversity.com )

hmm I can't really make a full explaination but a Pole Vector is an object which gives an IK chain, the information of where bending
When should I use joints versus an IK spline?
hmm IK spline is a joint chain too ;) ... IKspline allows you to make things like Spine , tail , ears etc .. you control an IK spline using Tip / middle targets . You have to understand first what is the difference between IK and FK ;)
thx for kind words
clement
Edit : some have been more faster than me to answer :D !
