cwang 04-12-2003, 11:39 AM Hi! I am a student here at Ringling School of Art and Design. Here is my senior thesis! It is completed except for maybe a few minor things I would like to change.
Please go to:

Sorry only medium size works at the moment...will get the others.
Here is my Demo Reel in progress if anyone is interested.

Hey, that short is really nice. I like it. Really cool animation and rendering. Did you use Mayas standard renderer or MR?
Two minor things. That monsters head really looked out of place, it just doesn't fit with the style of the other models. It's too simple, without character.
And those pitched voices take away some atmosphere too. Maybe get some (female) friends or colleaques for a better voice over.

I used Maya's standard Renderer...I totally agree with you about the monster head...unfortunately it was my first model in this project and I was kind of rusty with modeling.
Haha I agree with the voices too, I've had comments about that too...the people I had making the voice for me just didnt sound right, I ran out of time to search for more talent so I had to tweak the pitch a little.
Thanks
Alex
Just another little question. How did you produce those blurred/glowing highlights? Those are nice.

Colt-
One of my really talented friends actually taught me that trick...in my compositing program (Shake) I just have a layer of say my main character and than another one that is underneath it...the one underneath I Blur, fade, and increase the contrast/brightness.
Hope that makes some sense.

Hope you all enjoy it somewhat..

It's a GREAT short... I LIKE IT :applause: :buttrock:
I agree with others about the voice, it's the only thing that kinda distracting, but it's a minor though :scream:

Very nice work, I think you went a little over board though with the depth of field.

PCollier-
Thank you very much, I am flattered...I too was hopping for more comments and responses.
raden-I do agree with you about that DOF blurry thing. I was hoping to go more for a dream like effect...but I guess in some shots it just looked out of focus. I will be sure to go back and fix that. Thanks for your comments..I really appreciate it!

I enjoy the animation...pretty humourous... DOF is definitely overkill. You could use AE or other composite program to achieve the dreamy soft focus look. Well done!

I go to the Savannah College of Art and Design, and films like this make us greatly aware of the fantastic work coming out of the high-end 3D schools now adays. Great work, from the concept to the finishing secondary animation. Very nice.

Thanks for the comments guys.
Dzogchen: I will be sure to look into the DOF...its actually mostly done in shake so I can just easily tone it down.
Maplewood54: Thanks! I am flattered. I was actually going to go to SCAD originally but decided on Ringling last minute. I have seen stuff from SCAD and its really great! I also really think some of the classes offered in the program sound really cool...like you have a shader writing class? Good luck to you!
Thanks

really nice and profesionnal work for a student animation.. my only crits would be about the clarity in the story.. ok I got the thing about the morning glory stuff, but it`s still a bit confusing..
but hell all the rest is amazing! kep it up!

Wonderful animation.
I actually liked the womens' voices, they made me think of a flock of birds (and with about the same attention span).
Good luck on your job hunting!

cwang: I thought the animation was ok. The DoF didn't really bother me that much, and I thought the animation, texturing, and lighting were really solid.
The demo needs some work. I know a lot of it will be comprised of this thesis animation you've worked on, and thats fine, but if it is going to be the front of your reel, try to time it better with the music. Remember, it is a whole animation, and since you're not showing the whole piece, edit some nice shots together and pace them nicely. I like the flow with the, "show us something more." That worked well. I don't think you should start the head at the back, since there are little/no textures there. You may want to think of doing some facial animation, and keeping the camera pan to just a, left to right, instead. The work in progress needs to go. Your demo is only for finished work. If you really want to use that model, have a slow cam movement from bottom to top (excluding the un-modeled parts) and come up with a nice way of showing off the wireframe. Then it is an animation, and a design peice, without showing an unfinished model. Everything else was ok, but the ending should be more present. I would have rather seen the shot of him seeing the sign to the other town, and then the quick dash off screen.
Try to remember, this is my opinion, so don't take what I say to heart, they're just some suggestions. Overall it was a good real, and had great material. I'm looking forward to the final cut.

This is amazing, I am getting so much great feedback from everyone.
pascal blanché - I am very flattered by your comments. Your work has become such a profound inspiration for me! Yes I agree about the story, I struggled a lot with it along it way. If you think of any paticular shots I could add to make it easier to understand please tell me!
dmcgrath- Thanks!:bounce:
DeCarlo Limited - That was what I was going for! :buttrock:
Shin_Iori - Thanks so much for your incredibly valuable input! Yes I am still trying to fine tune my demo reel. I actually have taken out my work in progress model and it is pretty much completed now execpt for the ears and I have it lit and shaded. I probably should update it since som many people are watching it. You said I shouldnt start the head at the back...what shot is this? The one with just the monster head swinging? Thanks again.

I Liked the animation and I agree about the DOF. I might be stating the obvious, your story seems to mimic the life of a CG artist - show me more.

Now that your piece is featured on the "front page" of CGTalk you'll probably get a lot more responses. I've just put my demo reel up on my website www.johnmacfarlane.net (http://www.johnmacfarlane.net) and am about to start my own thread, so we'll see if animation just doesn't get the respect it deserves ;)
I liked your reel, but thought the girl's voice kinda fit. They're just 1-dimensional characters, you know? They just stand there and swoon  The poor knight is actually eclipsed in a way because the performance of the girls is more memorable. I think you had a lot of fun animating them, didn't you? :D I'd get rid of the WIP because only your best stuff should be on your reel.
I think everyone else has hit the other major points of concern. Good luck and keep up the good work.

Nice animated short, and some cool models. I think it could use a bit less much blur in the surroundings but nice work.

I just watched your demo reel, guess I will have to see the short in its entire glory. I did see that the Depth of Field was a little out of controll... but hey. Its rendered allready. You probably arn't going to go back and re render the thing.
