I've been usingn 7.5b since it was released and i've not had any problems as yet.
I had too many scripts that no longer worked with 7.5b, so I'm back with 7.5.

Hi Leigh,
I experienced this problem using the 7.5b
Same scene rendering time :
7.5 -> 9s
7.5b -> 41s
It seems it's getting glued when rendering transparent polygons ( a clipmap in the scene)
Dual Xeon 2.6
Win XP
Did you notice something like that ?

Wow Facial, no I haven't! But I can't recall having used transparency since I upgraded.... I must check that out :surprised

Hello, the rendering- speed- issue is a known bug. I found it shortly after the release of LW 7.5b.
It has been very hard to find the source of the speed- drop, though.
AFAIK the bug is related to SDS and deformations(I have not tried looking after transparencies yet).

If I were you(god forbid for your sake)I would wait on this 7.5c.
Its up to you but the hassle to me wasnt even worth the bandwidth to ddownload and I'm on cable.
Just hang till they come with this "fix".
Its up to you though, you might not have any probs.

7.5, on a Mac. I downloaded the original file for 7.5b, but it was corrupt. By the time I got around to downloading the one that they "fixed", Newtek had taken down 7.5b for the Mac altogether. At this point, I'm not sure that I'll even bother when and if they do decide to re-post it.
7.5 is working fine for me now...I'll probably just wait to see what 8 brings.

Leigh, better learn how to deal with scripts.
When you get hired on a WETA they are gonna have you working with those MELScripts so basic scripting is going to come in handy.

Scripting for me is just too unexciting. When I still used to use Max I wrote quite a few scripts, but for some reason, I've never done any in LW

ooops sorry I voted for the wrong option. My eyes just glazed over and I saw 7.5b (I'm using something after 7.5b). I should've checked the other '7.5b' option. "My BAD!"
Yeah I'm still using it, and it's a nightmare mess (it's my choice to keep using it, so don't ask). I don't mean kind of just a little bit bad, I mean that Newtek really should be ashamed of themselves for putting out such an appalling update. It's so bad that it's not funny.
In case you miss understood me let me say it again. "Lightwave 7.5b is BAD!" And I don't mean your average garden variety bad, or you Michale Jackson kind BAD. It is a sad kind of bad, like Elvis has left the building kind of bad.

haha
it's not that bad I guess, I mean I can't rotate an object anymore (it just goes from 45 degrees to 3000), I can't zoom in on the viewport anymore, same prob, and my GUI cycles through an 8 bit colour pallete like heavy metal band on bad acid, all the most essential plugs have died. I can't open two windows at the same time, ie Surface Window and the Preset Shelf, they keep dissapearing behind the main APP. I can't save my font list. PS1 fonts no longer work and I can't believe they're still sending out oupdates with dud QTools, that's been an issue since 7b update.
Surely they would say to themselves. "okay we know there's any issue with QT tools , we know that it use to work and that we messed it up!" And then you would think that they would make a note to themselves.
"DO NOT SEND OUT THE DUD QTOOLS PLUGIN EVER AGAIN!"
But no they can't do that, why not?? It seems like a simple thing to me.
I'm using Lightwave 6.5- which is working a treat for me....

man im happy I checked the forums when the upgrade first came out, or else I would have installed it. While it was tempting to take the chance on the new version, most people cant afford to take a risk on a buggy lw if they use it everyday. I say just stick with 7.5, wait for 8, and check out everyones comments on the new version before installing it...no matter how tempting it may be:wip:
7.5b isn't all that bad unless you're into LScripting.

i think one has to be in the frame of mind for scripting. at least from my experience that is so. i find scripting as exciting as finding out new tools in lw, but even more so.
i am an drawing-man by birth, so scripting, or programming is/was an acquired taste. but if i may speak for some, the art of programming is very much an art, as much as it may be a science. the more i get into scripting, the more i appreciate programmers' (esp. lw's programmers - like bob hood) creativity and ingenuity from the standpoint of actually trying to code something rather than simply enjoying the fruits of their labor and going 'wow.'

riki,
what version of windows are you using... this happened to me and a few others back with LW7 and Win98, after I went to 2000 the problem stopped.
I don't remember if there were any other solutions back then, but you might try a search on the archived LW forums over on Newtek.
Try this for fun? - when you lose the window, estimate where the command buttons should be, and click on the main interface at that point... it'll close the "hidden" window.
Till I went to 2000, I'd then slide the main LW window over to the right, and reopen the Surface Editor.

yeah, good luck with it... I had also put in an upgrade of my NVidia drivers at the time, but I don't think that was the problem.
While you're here, I have to say that the modeling tutorial you put up is really nice, I wish I had it about 8 years ago - clean, concise, and touches on all the major tools. It should be a first stop for all new users.

mmm based on current results, 6.8% of users are using a version past 7.5b. If that's true how come we don't get some leaks about extra functionality etc.

We're up to 9 people saying, "I'm using something after 7.5b :) now." Even if we only count a third of that number, there's at least three people out there using the "newer" version.
