View Full Version : Freeware email (POP/SMTP) server for localhost?
mixermanic 10-31-2007, 08:43 PM Hi guys,
Can anyone recommend a freeware email server for Windows XP that will provide me with POP and SMTP capabilities on localhost?
It is not for use on the "net", simply on my computer so I can log alerts and other info from render managers etc into Outlook.
Thanks,
Martin

I've personally never heard of that before..... to run something on localhost. But would it simply work to configure POP mail for this purpose such as gmail or yahoo mail?

Hi Chuck,
Thanks for the reply.
I don't think it would work though. My workstation is NOT on the internet - I just want to be able to set my render manager and other apps to be able to email "martin@localhost" to log things. This would all come into my inbox on the same machine.

oohh, I see what you mean. Yeah, I'm really not sure about a localhost solution but one alternative is to see if there are any extra program log plugins you can find for your apps. That might be a better solution if they exist. I'm not really a CG person so I'm not sure what ur apps are capable of.
Another option that will be a lot of work and expensive, but kind of well worth it in my opinionis to spend the cash to get yourself a Synology NAS device, wire it directly to your PC via crossover ethernet cable, and mod the unit into an email server, which will also have built in FTP, web server, SQL, media center, functions. There's lots of examples of how to use their hardware here: http://www.synology.com/.

I see what you mean - I just like the idea of everything coming into Outlook so all my logs are in one place :-)
Basically, I just want to be able to email myself on localhost, on a computer with no net connection...
The Synology device may be a long term solution (it looks very good!), but right now expensive is not an option! :D
Thanks!

If I understand your requirements correctly, I think any of the free email servers should be able to handle this.
Try something like argosoft, they have a freeware version.

(The one I use, and would recommend, is no longer free!)
