Edge loop is just a way of help you select a number of edges without doing as much work. If you select an edge and then click on Loop or Ring,Shrink or grow you will see the afects. I have found the Shrin and Grow tool very useful when I am selecting faces. I hope that answered you question.

imagine a cylinder created in max...the edges that go around the cylinder to form an "o" are edge loops :)

Edgeloops are a series of edges that define a contour line on a model. By matching edgeloops to the shape and direction of muscular form and movement, you can create a topology that is useful for deformation and animation.
