(http://assets.cgsociety.org/nvart/1193829936)I was experimenting with fluid effects and came up with this.
I wanted to create something that would be difficult to achieve with reality and yet looked realistic.
Using deformers I pulled the centre of the formation inwards and rendered it using hdri and dof in mental ray. I tweaked the saturation in photoshop and cleaned up some of the polygonated holes in the fluid fx.
I like the way it resembles an eye in a surreal kind of way.

hi
For me , the best entry for the moment ,the choice for the light is brillant ,you've said you
use maya fluids ?that's it ? So you convert Fluids to mesh...maybe...sorry for the technical
question but what is the resolution of the fluid for this pic ? and what is the noise you use
for the opacity ?...
Anyway ,absolutly splendid picture ! looks like a real lava pic , amazing.

Awesome image, it looks real, maybe a little too real actually.
From the contest info: "The whole point is to create images that are clearly creations of the digital world but retain the artistic beauty and composition of a traditional painting. "
While your image is amazing, I think somehow making it look more digitally created might help you out in tihs contest.

Thanks a lot , very interresting ....
Amazing image. The details and the flow are really great. I like the contrast between the 'perfect' black center and the high detailed and breaked up fluid a lot.
