View Full Version : Help Modelling Problem!
MPoretti 10-31-2007, 04:26 AM I Modelled an ear Separate from a head and put them together using the "merge verticies" option in Maya. I then went to smooth the "Combined" meshes.
They are seemingly disconnected, yet the geometry divides accordingly when smoothed.
From left to right; pictures of the geometry before smooth, after smooth, and an interior view.

Can anyone please help me out im sort of new at organic modelling

Here is another failed attempt at merging the two objects, this time i tried merge multiple edge tool.
From left to right: Me combining the meshes, me selecting the edges, and the result (some twisted geometry)

This is really starting to be a bother, please help!!!

Your ear have the normal inverted I guess.
Try to display the face normal (Display->Polygons->face normals), if they are inverted select all the ear faces and reverse them (Normals->reverse).

Thank you for your response, it seems that the normals are all facing the same way.

have you tried "edit polygons->normals->soften/harden->all soft" ?
Hi,
I am not a Maya-User, so it's just an idea: in the smooth-view it looks like the ear and the head got different smoothing-groups. Maybe you check that? :)
Good luck

Actually from your picture it looks like the normals on the head's faces are pointing inward and not outward as they should be.

Looks like you need to conform the normals.. the faces above the ear are pointing in.
