no, technically I don't see a problem. :)

but I think I know what you mean. have you tried:
1. increasing intensity till it fills required area?
2. changed decay rate to linear rather than quadratic?
3. added a second light with linear falloff to acompany the original lights?
4. added an (yes im going to say it!) ambient light to use as fill?
5. painting the scene with spotlights?

try some of those out and let us know what may work or what isnt working for you.

I think metal is right. All you need is some stronger fill light.

Try another one like your last, keeping the light intensity where it is. Change the color olf the lights to a medium blue grey (like the main color in the lower right of this photo: http://www.photographyprops.com/browseproducts/Gray-Blue-Muslin-Backdrop.html or the ligheter blue grey bands in the wall on the left side of your scene).

If it is still too bright make it darker. Then adjust the blueness/greyness to ge the look you want. You might also want one light bluer and the other greyer so thay illuminate the scene diferently.

Agreed. That means actually not increasing the existing light tubes but adding another light(or more) which fills the shadows(hence the name) a bit. Your last state of work is plain burn out which could be possible, but requires harder shadows and some kind of glare around the lights.

Have a read here (http://www.itchy-animation.co.uk/light.htm), usefull stuff.

hey! that looks prety good. :)

but now I see a blaring problem! haha. ok, not blaring... but I keep expecting to see something or someone laying on the bed. the desertedness (is that a word?) is uneasy.
