I like storys that are conveyed through imagery, and music such as this one. The absence of dialouge/monolouge if done effectively strenthens the meaning in the animation. i enjoyed this animation...now ill go see it again.:)
great work and congrats.

i dont comment much on these forums, but i have to let you know, that your shortfilm was beautiful. it was a simple idea, but the way you conveyed it was very moving, and the music was spot on, it kinda gives you a nostalgic feeling. well done:applause:

Thanks AlperGONEN. Since we probably won't be attending, if you are present at the screenings, we'd love to hear your feedback on the organization, quality of the projection, etc.

I think this is not a work that deserved to be plugged on the front page...

...And here we go again...Enough already with the plug issue! This is just an interview. What's wrong with that? Chill man!
As a portuguese (the composer is from Portugal) and as a Post Prodution Engineer, I don't understand why there isn't a line talking about the music. I mean, no disrespect for the creators but it's my opinion, this music has a bigger weight than it seems. I think it's almost half of the success of "Substantia".

Sorry but this kind of work was not worth front page on cgtalk in former times! As well as at any web or not web related forums since 1920!
Seems it's time to establish a new platform for premium CG Work! Good buye CG Talk! :-)
Keep on pushing your personal friends on page 1, maybe your aunts and grandmothers will appriciate it!
Good Bye, CgTalk!

So I'm guessing you did some research and somehow discovered a connection between the mod who plugged it, along with the writer of the CGS article and the authors? If you'd down your homework properly you'd have found out that this short won the prestigious Autodesk 'Ahead of the Curve' award and if that doesn't mean anything as far as achievements go well you really need to get your head sorted out...
I'm not quite sure, but somehow I'm getting the feeling some people are just jealous because a short film featuring no actual animated characters has had such a huge success. Unwaranted complexity never got anyone far. The creators kept it simple and managed to relate to hundreds, if not thousands of viewers. I for one am convinced that they're getting due credit.
Cheers

Thanks Carl! I couldn't have said it better. It's fair to express one's opinion and thoughts (that's what forums are for), but to suggest that there is some kind of personal connection between the CGS staff and the authors of the movie (us)... you better have some good proof of that (and if you've done any research in that direction, you can't have any, because it is FALSE), or we're getting back into the "defamation" topic.
I think its wiser for me to step aside when I read comments like Ron's, since its my work we're talking about, and I don't want it to become anything personal. But I have to honestly say that I do glimpse that "jealous" feeling you talk about, very strongly: it seems that some people get really hurt and angry in a personal level whenever some work gets notice or praise. When those people have no connection to the work or its creators whatsoever, it doesn't make any sense to me. Why do they take it more personally than the authors themselves do!? :)

Well now that's beeing an asshole.
That line just showed how much you don't know what your talking about. And it also shows you have issues and probably you really are a frustrated one.
You won't be missed.

I don't like the short.
But that's just my personal view.
I was getting nervous during I watched it caused by the great amount of 'fade to blacks' which where propably a indication of time passing by, but I think it is a little bit too overdosed and it's contraproductive to the rythm of storytelling in general. Maybe some combination of other techniques like timewarps (or whatever) would have helped.
Also some shots where simply too much and unneccesary in my opinion.
I also didn't find a way to get into the hole thing because of the stylistic appearence of the 'actors'.The stylized 'polygonal character' didn't really fit in.
The mixture of sizes, like combining water drops with the size of a planet also was kind of strange. I wouldn't say it's wrong, but it didn't really fit.
From the technical aspect I would say that it's good, solid work, I like the ice shading a lot. But it's nothing really special.
The music is really a pain I think. Now also, this is my personal view, but it's not creative to apply this standart piano-try-to-underline-the-feeling to a short. It deserves better. Also, technically, the music is solid work, but under the circumstances that....and now please guys, this is no offence.....it made it to the front page, it was kind of disappointing and I definately would have expected something else.
Cheers...

See guys and gals, this is an example of the RIGHT way to criticize. He states that he doesn't like the short (making clear that it is a SUBJECTIVE thing, not the all-knowing objective voice of God speaking through his fingers). AND more importantly, he states very clearly the reasons WHY he doesn't like it, in an objective, precise and respectful way.
Tonypolygoni, well understood!. not only I'm not offended, but I find your observations useful and worth being taken into consideration. Thanks for taking the time to tell us what you think! :) (and for teaching us a lesson about how to write constructive criticism)
this is cool. I liked the short, reminded me of "the fountain".
Good Bye, CgTalk!
bye, 19-posts-user. I'm sure you will be a big loss for all of us. Cgtalk is not frontpage, it's much more deep and it's not very smart from you to close doors to such a big source of knowledge.

Though the execution seemed a little amatuerish at places, the unique storytelling technique, in itself was worth the frontpage plug (so don't get disheartened by certain harsh and stupid comments).
I agree with tonypolygoni about the scene transitions and the music as well as the repetitive shots which kinda tested my patience a lil. But it was all worth it because you chose such an innovative way to tell this story. Very creative!

That's funny, because when I saw The Fountain, it reminded me of Substantia (which was already well under way). I'm glad to see that other people see the connections. :)
Hi! I read the article today and watched the movie. I think this Music and the Sounds are a very important part of "Substantia", it conveys the emotions well and makes the images stronger. They work very well together.
It's not that important how good the images look compared to other works, its important what they support and that they support in a good way... and your abstract 3dwork do that very well:thumbsup:
I loved the water drop at the beginnig, this shots are very strong, how it falls down to the heart, how the flower grows and how all that work together with the music. Maybe some movements aren't very smooth and the cut could be smoother, too. But I loved the effects when the flower dies and the emotions that came up. That one close up of the iceheart is not necessary, because it don't tell you more, and you got everything in the other shots whats important about the cold, strong, isolated ice and it stretches this part to much in my opinion. Somehow I loved how it ends, because you can interpret it in diffrent ways and it feels strange and surreal, tragical but beautiful. People feel what you want to communicate, or something similar or they just don't, they like it or they don't. I loved it because you could communicate the emotions! Good work, all of you and thanks for sharing this!
