View Full Version : Remember depth of field pro?
Anyone remember that fantastic plugin for max 3.1, depth ofd field pro, well I really miss it, and was wondering , how easy would it be to get this working with the latest max. I was thinking about this, and I thought, well if they can make max 4 plugins work with max 5, then surely it would be possible.
Any suggestions much appreicated. Hope this doesn't class as an illegal operation, I mean I have bought the original plugin! Apologies if it does, I just loved this pugin and would love to continue to use it.

The only way to get a max 4/5 plugin from a max 3 plugin is to do a recompile which requires the the VC++ source. The only reason max 4 plugs work in 5 is that 5 uses a slightly modifed version of the max 4 sdk and is listed as a 4.xx sdk when examining the plugs. max 3.x sdk plugs will only work in max 3.
what is vc++ code and in simplist terms, can it be done?? tutorial perhaps?

Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm no programmer, just stating what I know.
c++ is a programming language used to write plugins and stand alone applications. vc++ (visual c++) is a compiler which takes the program code as text and builds a file that can be used by the operating system.
Unfortunately, if I've understood things correctly, recompiling a plugin for a newer version of max is no biggy for the programmer(s) who made it in the first place, but afaik it's impossible for anyone else unless he/she has the original code as text.
There are other plugins though, Cebas Pro Optic Suite and X-dof. No free good ones afaik.
thanx anders what a beeacch ! Might consider contacting the programmer???

What Anders says is correct... the programmer(s) would have to recompile the source code... but they would also have to change some of the code in order for it to work for max 4-5. Not an easy task... but maybe the programmer(s) of this max 3 plugin might do it. Who knows.

Max 3.1 to 4, got most everybody I know in an immediate uproar as Max 4 wouldn't support most, if any of the 3.1 plugs. I know Digimation made good with registered users of their plugs with upgrades, though I believe some folks had to pay anyhow. At the same time, other developers simply hung up their coding boots and called it done.
If the talk of Max 6 being a complete rebuild is fact, I wonder what sort of chaos will arise when all our plugs need to be bought yet again. Perhaps Discreet won't toy with the architecture that severely. Guess we'll see.
I agree, if max 6 doesn't support max 5 plugs, then there will be uproar, the days of such easy and widespread selling are gone!! If they want to keep up with Maya, which already has hair, cloth e.t.c. then why make ppl re-buy after spending more to update max 6 - Geez!! Anyway.

Generally speaking, it was a free recompile anyway from 3 to 4, and in 4 to 5 most plugins worked anyway.
The bigger problem was when companies didn't recompile at all.
