Hi there,

I was just wanting to ask the pros a few questions if possible?

Specular maps - I understand what they are, but can I ask - do you always use them in your materials?

Obviously if you've got a material like wood with nails, you'd make a specular to bring out the nails - but say if you've just got wood, or just clith - would you use a specular map then?

If so what would it look like - would it be very dark, almost black with just very subtle differences? Some examples would be most appreciated!

Yep, I always use spec maps. Even plain wood has areas that are, at the very least, somewhat shiny.

Hi Leigh,

Thanks for the reply - so for a texture like this:

Should my specular be basically all the same color with just a little bit of variation?

Also what sort of colour would you make it? Gray, dark gray, black?

Well it totally depends on how shiny you want it to be
