Looks very good so far.

However, I do think it looks a little hot on the left side of the rendering. I would suggest bringing down the light about 7%.

A slight bump on the wood grain of the frame would help too. Just a touch. It should only be noticeable when one strains to look for it.

In regards to the frame, I noticed the bottom piece has the grain going vertically. I almost missed that. It should run horizontally.

The same goes for the painting itself. If it's meant to be canvas, it should look like canvas. Again, just a noticeable amount of bump. Maybe a hint of specular?

Keep up the good fight!

Looking very good. I agree with Medula's comments, and also the joins on the frame look a little wide, and could stand some bump or geometry to give them depth.

I think the material on the candlesticks could use some work. For some reason it looks good on the ashtray, but it doesn't work for me on the sticks. In both cases I think it would help a lot to add a subtle grime map in the diffuse channel.

Very nice image overall--keep it up!

looking good stu. maybe apply a soft glow accross the image as a post effect, it has a great feel to it, my only concern with trying to even out the lighting is that it will not just flatten it a bit too much, but it will pull it away from it's more painterly/photographic look towards something too clean, more cg. i would jest spen some time trying to very very subtley break up the straight edges of higher contrast a little, the back of the dresser, the frame. though it has to be so subtle that it's almost subliminal.

if you were to change the lighting what i would do myself is actually add two lights. the first one only affecting the candle sticks and the vanity box to the left and behind slightly, adding a little edge light to the candlesticks just to add a highlight really, it wouldn't be too strong. then on the right another soft fill light, this one just giving a little more of the reflected room light back, possible with a sligth shift in ho hot it is from the rest of the lights.

anyhow, it's a great job bud, well done.

totally sweet man but I would try and play with the specualr/diffuse to see if you can get it looking a little less uniform on the candle sticks/ashtray. but nice nice pic.

Excellent crits thanks guys

Marcus - Ya it does look a bit hot on the left hand side actually.

It could use a bit more bump.I am using 1% 2d noise of 50 grey and white set to random.I tried a wood texture de sat as a bump and it ruined the polished effect that I wanted, but I will work on that bump :)

The frame I only just noticed that,I can just change the mapping there and make a tag.

The painting actually has a brushstroked bump I made but I think a canvas texture might work a lot better.

Adam T - Ya the joins are to far apart.I made the frame so the corners had gaps so I could a realistic type join.

The candle stick material doesnt totally enthrall me either, but I used the 60 reflection 40 diffusion rule of thumb,if I use some environment to pull ut a bit more reflection wont that throw out the physics of how the material would really look?,worth a try anyway :)

Per - I thought about a subtle orange layer of very low softlight.

Maybe just a smidgeon of dof is what it needs.

I am still using 7 so I cant exclude the lights, suppose I could try clipping though.

For the lighting I have an area above the same color that I think a ceiling would be on say 30% and soft shadow, and I have a hot yellowish omni{soft hadow} off to the left at about 15 degrees from the camera, and a fill of darkish brown/orange at about - 15 degrees at half the y height as the hot omni is.

Might do some PS work on the next one.

JIII - Ya I agree about that.

Flingster - Ya that texture is the walnut one from the basic wood folder in C4D,so I chucked it into PS and made it a lot bigger and rubber stamped here and there.Still had to use cubic mapping though to any sort of decent wood grain look.I might be able to do something about that with some uv moving etc.

Thanks guys much appreciated

Great improvement. The candlestick material looks much better, and the frame texture too. I sort of prefer the look of the painting without the PS effect, though. And I still think the frame join is too wide. Looks like the thing's falling apart.

Adam thanks :) - Ya the bump on the painting is up a bt far I think,I agree there. As for the joins I moved them way in and they are actually about 3 mil or thereabouts apart so I am guessing maybe its the shadowing on the joins themselves?

I will see if I can get a pic of the frame to show you the corner.

Per - Thanks man :)

Thanks Randy :)

I am going to see how a radiosity render looks tonight :) ,I usually prefer not to use radiosity and sort out color bounce myself with lights as I find radiosity often does nasty things to the contrast.
