There are couple of students that had build an inexpensive motion capture device at MIT. This is the video I found here (http://signal.csail.mit.edu/node/69) called
Practical Motion Capture in Everyday Surroundings.
I know the technology has improved quite a bit with companies as http://www.organicmotion.com/ and http://www.moven.com/en/home_moven.php
This hybrid aproch dose not limit you to a studio and is inexpensive to build. Now if someone can show me how to build one. Take a look at the (PDF) (http://delivery.acm.org/10.1145/1280000/1276421/a35-vlasic.pdf?key1=1276421&key2=8224143911&coll=portal&dl=ACM&CFID=15151515&CFTOKEN=6184618)
