Hi all-

I am working on some blueish dreadlocks for a character, and I am really not having much success with the shader. I know that Maya has dreads in the paint tools...but I am in 3dsmax.

Any ideas on how to get a good shader that looks real? I am using lofts with displacement modifiers. ( btw, these modifiers are killing my render time)

here is where I am now:

Not looking bad, but hard to tell on a dark bkg.

Max's displacement is not worth it. Better to get a decent 3rd-party renderer for max that handles sub-pixel displacement. Maybe VRay? Not sure about which ones do it.

As for the shader, how about some subtle anisotropic specular?

Do you have good reference? No dreads here, but good nonetheless... http://www.3d.sk/hairs.htm

thanks.

not sure if y'all can see them. i put them on a black background because a white background blew out your eyes and you could not see any detail.

if it is too dark, let me know and I will upload a new one.

I think that looks fine :)

Although if you want them to look like they are dyed blue, you will obviously need to enhance the blue a lot more :)

Funny, I made some dreads the other day in LW using all procedurals, and mine looked pretty much exactly the same!
