View Full Version : Texturing a tree
WireWorX 04-11-2003, 05:36 AM Hi
I am in search of guidance on how to texture a tree. The tree was modeled in Tree_Pro 4, exported as dxf and brought into Max.
This is to be my most complicated form to texture to date and don't know where to start nor what would be the best approach.
My knowledge and experience of UV mapping I would classify as beginner, so if you going to help please be as detailed and clear as possible.
Looking forward to some great advice.
Thanks

For something like this then I'd say to go for procedural textures to make the bark and planar mapped bitmaps for the leaves (if you're going to get close enough to see them). Layered noise textures should do the trick nicely - If you're new to procedurals then take a look at the lava tutorial here (http://www.3dluvr.com/content/maxedout.php) to get you started. If you want to go down the uvmapped bitmap router then I'd say break up the model into seperate parts and use cylindrical mapping on the branches.

Getting the bark to "flow" along the direction of the branches isn't going to work well with procedurals, without having a good set of UVs to guide them.
You can however easily get a more random-looking bark without good UVs.
More flow.

Less flow.

I'd suggest doing the UVW Unwrap tutorials that ship with 3ds max. These will give you some ideas about how to make good UVs. It is worth the time to create them well.
