Title: Merman Elite
Name: Vivek Ram
Country: India
Software:

This was made as part of the merman modeling challenge on cgtantra. I couldnt quite finish it for the challenge so decided to make an illustration of it.
This guy is designed to be the lead of an elite task force of similar mermen of an otherwise all mermaid race. They are entrusted with the protection of the queen mermaid and are called in to fight only as a last line of defense. They were results of long experimentation with various sea life and humans to build a perfect weapon. they're bodies are grafted with that of a shark with electrocuting tentacles that emerge out of the rib cage area. The jewels on the chest signify rank. They are a killing force efficient enuf to fight without armour or weapons.
This is also my first full character in zbrush.
Hope u guys like the design and final piece.
U can also catch this on the cover of this month's Animation Today magazine.
Base model in maya, sculpted posed and textured in Z Brush. Comped with screen shots in photoshop.
Cheers!:)

It's a nice character model and sculpt, but I don't like the compositing job. It doesn't fit right against the background image.

The background doesnt bug me that much, its better then a over complicated/detailed background that just takes away the main focus. I really like this image the background simplicity is a nice feel to it also.
I love design of this guy if you have any concept drawings or anything PLEASE post them id love to see them. i especially like the chest ranking idea and quick background story you posted, very appealing.

All in all man a great image, keep up the good work.
You get 5 stars from me for an overall great design, good model and impressive texturing.
Cheers.

Great character! The story is interesting as well :) I like the background inspite of it's simplicity or it's exactly the simplicity that I like :)

Bubbaloo: thanks man. I guess i rushed the final composite. Will keep an eye out for that the next time.

Skooter: thanks a bunch dude.....glad u liked the whole thing coming together.....i wanted to keep it simple as i didnt want the viewer losing focus of the main guy. I'll put up wires soon.:)

darkstarbg: thanks man....glad u liked the simple bg!

cat207: thankyou

gnassbasti: thankyou:)...I took about 15-20 days to finish the image....This was my first full piece in zbrush so there was a lot of learnin and sculpting at the same time....the texturing and lighting took about 2 days and the composite tweaking (26 layers)took about 2 days.

frank: thanks man:)

I hope you didn't get me wrong about the word "simple" :) It has enough depth and puts the emphasis on the character.
Great close-ups! Looks great from the side view as well. Interesting shape of the head.

Fantastic work as always :) I abslutely loooove the detail in the back and the arms, such a pity that you can't see it in the final image.

Can't wait to see the 'making of'!
