View Full Version : Lincoln Caricature Bust
aRTCy 04-11-2003, 05:11 AM Hey,
First time posting anything. I worked on this bust of Abraham Lincoln about two weeks in Maya. Our class hasn't learned textures yet so eventually I will do that but I kind of like it now. It kind of gives a familiar feel to that of the Lincoln Memorial. Follow the link below and go to the very end of the thumbnails. The site is best view at 1024x768.

Hey,
Just thought I'd help out by posting the stills of this model.

Thought it might help generate some responses.
BTW, this model was by Richard Clark - the originial poster of the message.

looks like one of those models that look better untextured

good work! the only thing that is bugging me is the eye-bag folds are a little to "sharp"

Stunning, totally stunning. I'm not sure if it's best left as a "bust" or should be completed as an actual cartoon model of ole' Abe in a finished scene. I don't know, it's wonderful, but I'd like to see him come alive.

wow, that is really nice work!!!
Wow!! Great design, much awesomeness :D
i dig it big-time - i like the sharp-edge caricature style... i'd like to see a whole statue, tho. this is incredible work for a beginner... i think textures should be somewhat easy if this is indeed a statue...

Looks amazing, and very inspiring...i think it would look great with some color, could get very moody.....

Wow! Your work is amazing, and to think you are only starting out! Can't wait to see more of your work!
What technique did you use to model Abe?

Thanks for all your replies,
To clarify something, this is not my first model, I'm not just starting out. This is my first posting at this site. Sorry for the confusion.
My technique is very simple. I model with a simple cube and cut faces from there. I fell in love with the "Split Polygon Tool." This literally became my best friend in Maya. I first started off with my sketch, and I've always had a sharp style to my drawings as well as my models.

I would split polygons according to the sketch and split from those as well in order to avoid strange polys.
Hope this makes sense.

after taking a look at your sketches, i was wondering if u were thinking of adding texture to the models hair? (its a bit dificult to distinguish it from his face.....)

Do you plan on doing the entire body? Will it be animated? Or are you sticking with just the head?
It would be interesting to see the style of the head carried to the rest of the body.

Cool! Are the eyes sunken in a tad too far though? Still, excellent stuff.

At this point, being so busy with school and other projects I can't continue on it right now but in the future I might model the entire body with that style (even give him a top hat) and begin to animate him.
And the eyes might seem sunken in too far because of the brows that protrude so sharply.

Really nice idea, and it looks absolutely great. In my opinion, it doesn't have to be textured, it should just look like it's of marble or something.

Very cool, really like the style..
Only thing that kinda sticks out to me is the beard shape doesn't seem to match the apparent shape that's in the model sheets..seems like it doesn't flow out from the chin the same in both pics, and doesn't flow out smoothly on the model.
Anyway that's the only crit, look forward to when you have time to do more of him or more chars like this.

You're right about the beard. I was wondering if anyone would notice that. I'll have to work on that. Thanks

Great work. Perhaps when you decide to model his body you could animate him as a bobble head or something.:applause:

Great job! I like it!:D

Holly pink! This is so freaken sweet! I realy like the smile lines and the folds under the eyes. They are perfect. Even the sketch looks sweet, but the nose in the drawing looks a bit more curving up, and the model looks more of the opposite.

I like it. I was wondering though, if you could show a wire frame and tell the method you usedin making.:applause:

Let's see some more of your stuff....be fun to see your style on non-caricature projects.

O.K. spoondesigns. Here's the lowpoly version. I meant to post these wireframes earlier. Sorry. It looks like a mess, I know.

I started with a polygon cube (not nurbs) and split vertices from there. Place it in a smooth proxy.

can you post the wireframe of the low-poly proxy? The stuff you posted is kinda hard to see how you built it....

I'd love to see the wire frame. I think this piece is great the way it is, without a body. how about doing a short animation with Abe seeing himself in his present state....And reacting towards it...Something funny....

Maybe that is the low poly version? Looks like it might be.
great pencil!
have you experimented with different textures, clay, marble, wood...? not that there's anything wrong with your piece, just curious as to what it would look like, that's all.
could you post a wireframe, if it's no prob.
great execution from pencil to final model
too eager to comment and didn't get past the first page. haha
it's that good
