View Full Version : cable/snake
AroundTheFur 04-11-2003, 03:29 AM my animation final is to animate an inate object. im going to animate a guitar cable acting like a snake, slithering past the camera in a couple shots, sitting upright about to attack, then snapping forward into the guitar's input jack. whats the best way to animate this cable. im using maya, probably going to do the cable in nurbs. so do i even bother using a skeleton or just cluster the points on the curve i use and go fk(sorta). im just not sure the best way to achieve a slithering effect, and something that wont take years to animate. much thanks.

what the hell!? help would be nice?
I dont animate much adn there is probably an easier way to do this but what about the spline ik chain? of course you would have to keyframe that...so that might be a bad idea.

You could just cluster the points and animate them. But then the cable's geo would stretch when you move the points.
I dont know if you want the cable to stetch or not?
If you dont, then Id put a whole shwak of joints in and rig it with an ik spline.
Then bind the cable, now the joints will move along the curve controled by clusters and not stretch the cable because its weighted to the joints.
Dont forget you can apply deformers to the ikSpline curve, like the Bend or twist. They might make things faster for you.
Make sure they're before the clusters in the history if you use em.
Have fun, you picked a tough thing to animate.
