View Full Version : Nefertiti
TinyCerebellum 10-24-2007, 05:47 PM Hi,
Here's a practice painting that I've been working on lately in Photoshop. I haven't done any digital painting in several years, and this has been a lot of fun to work on. I'd love to hear some critiques from the pros, so I can get it ready for the finished work forum.

Hi,
I am doing this for a living yes but I wouldn't exactly call myself a pro just yet... got to many things to work on understanding and doing better and quicker! :D
But I have to say what a beautifull picture you have painted! looks really nice... I really like the soft warm feeling I get from it.. even though shes looking away from me in disgust of the normal man... :) Guess that is called an unreachable love eh?
But I got two points.. first she has no sideburns. As I remember the headdress covered these up (yours doesn't) and she would have had some right? or is she bald in your vision.. digusted by body hair. :p
Second is the breast... I like the size and the fabric.. but I feel it could with a little more roundness... just a bit mind... since I think the perkyness is good! But then again this is probably personal preference right?
Anyway.. thanks for sharing... loved the surprise of finding this gem :)

Exquisite lighting, beautiful anatomy, luscious color palette.
I'm no pro, just a dabbler...Speaking strictly as a viewer who might come across this in a gaming magazine, or on the cover of a book, my instinctive reaction is to rub my neck and not care for the work, regardless the fabulous rendering.
That headdress is just too stylized with the weight on the back of the head...Even if it were made of cardboard (the egyptians discovered "paper" I believe), the sheer mass of it would pull her head back, or just fall off her head. Especially if she were bald underneath and sweating...lol!
I know Character Development for the industry strives to have some practical engineering physics as regards balance, mobility, etc. I do not know if it applies to clothing and accessories...I guess WarHammer characters disprove the concern in that dept...

Thank you for the comments, guys.
Matsman, I did try to make the breasts a bit rounder, and I've also lifted up her left breast a bit to match perspective better. I also added a bit of hair, like you mentioned.
CybrGfx, you're definitely right about the physics of it, but I exagerrated the shape that way on purpose, because I find this silhouette a little more pleasing from an artistic perspective.
I also darkened up the image a bit, as it came to my attention that it shows too bright on some monitors, and some parts of it were a bit messy :).

I find that the exaggeration of the headpiece is really what draws your eye, if it was realistically proportioned it wouldn't be nearly so dramatic. I love the details and overall feel of the piece. My only suggestion would be that you have such wonderful color and form, the only element slightly out of balance is the crisp detail. The face and headdress have a striking silouhette and the necklace is quite crisp but her torso and clothing have no defined outline. I like the mottled painted look but I think that if even just the front edge of her shirt was sharpened a little more then it would make her entire form pop out that much more. Great work!
