A quick post on some new modelling DVDs CG Academy will be releasing at the end of this week.
We are releasing a new 4 DVD series on Modelling Fundamentals in 3dsmax. I beleive in not doing things by halves, so in my mind it needed a four DVD series to tackle this topic. And still I had to skip some elements of 3dsmax's very extensive modelling toolset (Don't worry, I've only ommited basically less used/obsolete tools i.e. Nurbs/Spline Patches).
What I HAVE included are the core tools, what I (and I beleive most of the CG industry) consider to be the key modelling toolset in 3dsmax. So, here is a description of each DVD with their artwork is posted below.
This is the first in a four DVD series that aims to teach the fundamentals of modelling in 3dsmax. In this first DVD you will learn how to effectively navigate and manipulate objects in 3D space. Then the DVD moves on to teach you what polygons are and how they are fundamental to all modelling systems. Then we learn about Primitives and how we can change their form using Modifiers and Spacewarps. And finally we make a start on a series wide project to build a go-cart using the skills developed in this DVD.

This DVD continues our series on modelling fundamentals by exploring polygonal modelling. You will be shown the key differences between the Edit Mesh and Edit Poly geometry types. You’ll be shown the main elements of mesh editing, including creating polygons from scratch, attaching and detaching meshes, flipping Normals, modifying smoothing groups and material IDs, ring selection and division, bevelling and much more.

This DVD continues our look at the fundamentals of modelling in 3dsmax. Here we focus on 3dsmax’s curve based modelling toolset, which is based on Bezier Splines. You’ll be shown how to create Splines from scratch, or via the numerous built in templates. How to edit and combine those Splines into more complex forms. How to use the Extrude, Lathe and Loft Tools to create complex custom surfaces. We continue our series spanning go-cart modelling project. And we conclude with a quick look at Splines use in animation.

DVD4 covers the topic of Sub-D modelling. This follows on from the knowledge taught in DVD2 in the series on pure poly modelling. Sub-Ds are the industry wide standard these days for many forms of modelling, from creatures and flora, to cars and trains. This DVD concludes the series by exploring how you can (and indeed should) blend together the various modelling techniques shown in the series so far. And also how a procedural workflow can greatly improve your modelling speed and flexibility in 3dsmax.

This series spans over 22 hours of tutorship, with the average DVD being some 5+ hours in length. It is very comprehensive and provides a great introduction to 3d modelling on 3dsmax. It will also be of great use to those coming to 3dsmax from other platorms, and I'll bet will even provide some insights to those who consider themselves intermediate level modellers...
Each DVD will go on sale for £36 each (+VAT to non business European customers). We will also have a boxed set available, which will contain all four DVDs and will sell with a 10% discount on the combined price.
We are just wrapping up on these items store info pages and integration. That should be complete by tonight. So these DVDs will go on sale by Thursday (I would guess right now). If you have any questions about these DVDs, or indeed any other in our range, please ask away here ;)
Cheers
