Wow, looks like they've done a pretty massive release.
Good on them :)

I think it would be very useful if tools such as 'Blender', 'Gimp', 'Inkscape' and 'Scribus' all kept one eye on each others development and interoperability, to encourage a more unified working environment between applications.
An open source equivalent of Creative Suite could then emerge from these individual softwares that would all operate visually and functionally in tandem.
To a lesser extent Scribus already keeps one eye on the progress of Inkscape, as does Gimp for .SVG. But jumping between one open source app. to the next with regard just these four is still a complete headache for beginners and advanced users alike.
It would be useful to settle on some GUI common ground I think, not least when Blender, Scribus and Gimp are all touting complete visual re-edits in the near(ish) future. Far easier to learn one interface than four, which is how the likes of Adobe's paid-for suite can still hold all the aces.

Incredible! Simply astounding. 'Grats to the devs and all who worked on this release. Will have to wait for the windows release, I just hope they have added better wacom support. :P
EDIT: I also agree with most everything Rawlings (above) said. But I doubt it will happen.

Fully agreed that would help alot.
i'd love to see the tools of the GIMP in a Bledner-ish GUI, the windows and panels of the GIMP confuse me.

Hi,
we do 'keep an eye' on each other to some extent. There has even been talk of a 'open creative suite', but I don't expect anything happening in the near future.

Is it 16 bit now? Seriously if any package claims to be serious needs to support 16 bit formats including editing of them. I have used gimp for sometime but in previous versions that was an obstacle.

Fully agree with this. One thing that attracts people to non-open applications like Photoshop is because (for the most part) there is a consistant user-interface between Photoshop and Illustrator, or Word and Excel, etc.
I had given GIMP a chance years ago and some inconsistancies within the UI totaly turned me off on it. However this does indeed seem like a cool update - would be willing to give it another shot.
One thing I have always wanted to see is Adobe to merge Photoshop with Illustrator and even Image Ready and Flash into one vector/raster/animation/web graphic application.
Wonder if GIMP would offer such functionality??

Curious... Is there a program like this for Mac? I know they have some way of getting it installed, but it's overly complicated (for me at least).
