View Full Version : Animating a Puncture

In a short film I'm making, there is a scene whaere a can opener lunges at a can, puncturing a hole in him. How would I go about animating the wound in the can? Is this an animated boolean? If so, how do I create that?

If someone could give me a quick crash course on this I'd be extremely appreciative.

Thanks.

You could indeed do this as an animated boolean providing you don't try and collapse the stack(and thus loose the animation)..however be aware that booleans in Max can be both tricky and a little er.. 'unreliable'. Time spent trying to make both meshes similar in poly size can be worth while. It is also worth noting that one of the good features of Max (when they work) is that both objects can be animated in a boolean operation.
Drawback with this method is that if the opener withdraws from the can, the boolean will close up with its exit, though I'm sure there's work rounds for that.
You could also if that proves too awkward, simply cut your mesh (chamfering a vetex may be enough of a strting point.)and animate that, extruding the edges if desired. :)

There is also a deform plugin over at http://www.max3dstuff.com/ by Peter Watje "object deform' which will probably go a long way towards acheiving this, it will deform the can in where the can opener impacts it. you could then just simply animate the tear as xynaria suggests

I xoulld personnaly do that with a morpher (one clean can, one punctured can) so U can have that schrapnell look on the border of the hole .The morpher also add the opportunity to make a larger part of the can deform with the impact, like what happens when U really puncture a can .There will be a problem cause your clean can don't have a hole in it and the morpher cannot create it (objects having to have same polycount), but U can still make one clean with a tiny hole and replace the original right before impact (by using visibility track for example) .Hope I helped you, if not let me know..................Good luck!

that does help, greatly. I like the idea of the replacing it for one with a hole. Is visibility track difficult to set up? How is it done?

You make the original can, then U make the one with the tiny hole, make sure to refine the area around the hole cause U'll need the faces to make it open like a metallic flower .You align your 3 cans .Now, visibility tracks : select your object, right click to trck-view selected, select your object in track view, add a visibility track (eye icon ) .To show it go into the filters dialog box (top left) check only the Selected object box & get back to track view, U shall see your visibility track .Now just use the add keys tool and enjoy .I don't know if I explained it properly cause my en glish is not the best, so if you have troubles doing it, let me know......
